€œGeomatics€? is a technology and service sector focusing on the
acquisition, storage, analysis, dissemination and management of
geographically-referenced infomation for improved decision-making.
It encompasses the disciplines of surveying, mapping, remote
sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
Geomatics technologies and services are employed in many sectors
of the economy. For example, they are used in natural resource
management, the development of the transportation, communication
and utility infrastructure, land use planning, emergency
vehicles and siting of retail and other service businesses, and
real property registration and administration. Any activity
which has a location, geographical dependency or component can
benefit from geomatics.
GIAC, the Geomatics Industry Association of Canada, is the only
national business association dedicated to serving the geomatics
industry in Canada. The Association is committed to expanding
geomatics markets nationally and internationally through
advocacy, promotion and education.
Originally formed in 1961 under the name Canadian Association
of Aerial Surveyors, GIAC now encompasses the entire range of
geomatics diciplines. Our members include more than 100 of
Canada€™s leading geomatics service and technology firms, and
approximately 80% of the active exporters in this sector.
As an advocacy voice on behalf of the geomatics industry, GIAC
influences public sector policies and programs affecting
geomatics business. Paticular emphasis is placed on promoting
government contracting-out and procurement policies and
practices which will serve to strengthen the geomatics
industry€™s
international competitiveness. Developing effective
industry/government partnerships is also an increasing focus in
our competitiveness improvement work.
GIAC operates as an information conduit to both our own Member
Firms and to other geomatics stakeholder organization, and
