Brief History
Southport was known as Canadian Forces Base Portage la Prairie from 1940 -1990. The Southport Aerospace Centre Inc. was formed in 1990 as a not-for-profit corporation with a board of local and business leaders to develop the base's assets after its closure. The corporation assumed ownership of over 607 hectares including the airport, residential properties, recreation infrastructure and facilities and all other assets in 1992. Over the past number of years, Southport has focused on the provision of military flight training facilities, as well as the development of other education and training programs.
Mission
Southport exists to thrive as a centre of excellence that provides opportunities in the aerospace, commercial and education sectors.
Airport Facilities
Major facilities include four active runways, with the primary landing strip 7,000 ft. Capability of supporting both VFR and IFR operations down to Cat 1 precision approach limits. Transport Canada approved air traffic control tower and ground support services are available during published hours of operations. The airport is available to the general public.
Commercial Space and Educational Facilities
Southport has over 1,450 square meters of prime office space available for lease in existing buildings. These facilities can be customized to accommodate specific requirements, and facilitate various operational classroom or office space needs.
5 storage bays ranging from 70-100 square meters, with secure individual access cold storage.
Residential
Over 180 residential rental housing units (2, 3 or 4 bedroom duplex style) on-site, as well as 34 rooms for student accommodation.
Horizon Village is a 50+ community, offering life lease or condominium tenure. Units constructed as commitments received.
Recreational Facilities
Major facilities include aquaplex, gymnasium, weight room, cardio room, bowling alley and golf course.
Commercial Development Opportunities
80 hectares of prime land currently available for new commercial and industrial development. (4 hectares fully serviced)
