A Sustainable Development Success Story
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of
the present without compromising the ability to meet needs in the
future. The Alpine Bakery has been an environmentally
conscientious business since it began operation in June 1984, and
it is an example of a business working toward a sustainable
future. The Bakery plays its role in caring for the environment
by promoting organic agriculture as well as reducing the impact
of its operation on the environment.
Mainstay of the business is breads ranging from specialty breads
such as spelt, kamut and rye to naturally leavened breads for
people with wheat and yeast allergies. One of the specially
developed breads, the Yukon Expedition Bread, has a Canadian
patent and is very popular among eco-tourists.
Complementing a wide variety of wholesome breads, the Alpine
Bakery makes fresh granola, pancake mixes, pasta, yogurt and
fruitcakes. They also carry unique gifts made by local
craftspeople.
The Bakery uses 100% organically grown grains, flours, nuts,
fruits, oils and vegetables for its products. All food and flour
leftovers go into a compost bin which is then employed as chicken
food and garden compost for other organizations. Biodegradable
cleaning products are used for dishwashing as well as general
cleaning. Alpine Bakery produces only one bag of garbage per day
of operation, which is disposed of in used flour bags made of
biodegradable materials. Cardboard and wooden produce containers
are recycled. Brown bags are supplied by the Raven Recycling
Society as well as the customers, and the Bakery carries canvas
shopping bags made by the Halifax Adult Service Centre which
operates Vocational programs for adults with mental handicaps.
The Alpine Bakery is committed to good health, good taste and
sustainable agriculture, because it is concerned for the quality
of our environment and the health of its customers. It is a
well-known fact that chemical "mono-culture" farming is polluting
precious ground waters and lowering the fertility of soil.
Organic farming, on the other hand, is based on crop rotation and
natural fertilizers with continual improvement. The Bakery
actively supports organic farming for many reasons, including the
fact that such practices improve the health of younger
generations, and teach them good values for when the time comes
for them to care for the Earth. Organic farming prevents soil
erosion, protects biodiversity through crop rotation. Supporting
organic farming helps small farmers and contributes to an economy
that cares for future resources.
The Alpine Bakery offers its customers an Organic Produce Club in
which fresh, organically grown vegetables and fruit are received
and distributed each week to members.
The store has an "environmental section" in which it carries
items made of natural fibers and/or recycled materials, as well
as health care products made of botanicals. There are displays
on environmental issues affecting the Yukon to promote
environmental awareness. This section of the store is entirely
educational, and non-profit in nature.
The residents of Whitehorse benefit from Alpine Bakery's
wholesome products made with high standards and nutritional
value. The composting and the extremely low impact garbage are
great assets to lowering costs in refuse management. Alpine
Bakery actively supports organic farming, which is known to be
beneficial to the environment. Their environmental awareness
corner is of direct assistance in environmental issues. The
effort the Alpine Bakery puts toward its environmental goals is
exemplary and shows that there are many actions that can be taken
toward sustainable development. The end result can make a very
significant difference environmentally, economically and
socially.
