A.F. Theriault - Son Ltd. is the oldest and largest privately
owned family run shipyard in Nova Scotia. The business has been
in existence since 1938.
Trends in the boat building industry have been kept current with
extensive new facilities and experience in building vessels in
fibreglass, steel, and aluminum. A very high level of
workmanship is maintained in both the old and new trades.
The gradual progression from building 3 masted sailing ships to
current state of the art fishing boats or finely crafted pleasure
yatchs has always been undertaken with enthusiasm and pride.
Given the unpredictability of the fishing industry, the shipyard
has managed to build new vessels as well as keep the repair
facility almost fully booked.
The major market area is the Maritime Provinces of Canada but
exports have gone as far away as Europe, Morocco, Israel,
St-Pierre et Miquelon, USA, Bahamas, Caribbean, and throughout
Canada. We are currently looking to extend our active market
area to the US New England states, Caribbean Islands, Mexico,
Central America, and the southern South American countries.
For the most part all plans have originated in the design office
of the shipyard. Currently we are using AutoCAD (computer aid
drafting) for our plans, as well as ProSurf (computer aid design)
for the structural design of some vessels. These programs offer
greater flexibility and time schedule advantages for the design
process. All large vessels are approved by the Canadian Coast
Guard, Canadian Steamship Inspection branch, with emphasis on
construction, safety, and stability. The rulings followed are
usually CSI, ABS, Lloyds, or Vertias.
In summary, A. F. Theriault - Son Ltd. is facing new challenges
and new technology with enthusiasm and determination. Great
pride in our products and services continue to be our main goal.
