SCIEX was incorporated in 1974 by a group from the University of Toronto Institute of Aerospace Studies. In 1981 SCIEX was acquired by MDS Health Group Limited.

In every product line, SCIEX has been the pioneer with the introduction of the first commercial mobile laboratories, triple quadruple mass spectrometers, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers, contraband detection systems, and electrospray based mass spectrometers. Joint venture partnerships have been a key component of the strategy to market products world wide, notably with Applied Biosystems Inc. and PerkinElmer Inc.
