The Cereal Research Centre (CRC), is one of 19 research centres
of the Research Branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. At
its facilities in Winnipeg and Morden, Manitoba, the CRC develops
improved varieties of wheat, oat, flax, pulses and ornamentals
adapted to the eastern prairies. Programs are focused on adding
value to the Canadian agriculture and agri-food industry. This
is accomplished by providing producers with high-yielding,
superior performing varieties with excellent quality
characteristics; and by providing processors with crops that have
improved end-product attributes. Approximately 50% of wheat and
oat acreage in Canada is seeded to varieties developed at the
CRC. This represents a farmgate value of close to $2.5 billion.
Since its inception in 1925 (as the Dominion Rust
Research Laboratory), the CRC has released 27 wheat, 22 oat, two
barley, 17 flax, 14 field pea, 123 ornamental and 53 fruit tree
varieties.
