The office operates as a collaborative design studio where staff share the same space allowing open communication and ease of exchanging ideas to resolve design challenges. Various mediums such as computer 3D models, physical models and sketches are used to develop design concepts. We work in an integrated design process with the many members of a project team including the Client, various engineers, cost consultants, environmental consultants, Contractors, manufacturers and artists.
Since 2005, Alfred Waugh Architect (AWA) has been collaborating with and advising cultural institutions, universities, governments, and communities to help them successfully achieve their building aspirations.
It is our commitment to listen carefully and work with each individual client to achieve a design solution appropriate to their needs. Community involvement is an important aspect of every project. The wisdom of everyone, including Elders, and youth assists in developing a vision that best reflects the community€™s cultural identity. We strive to create buildings with one foot in our historical past with the other confidently stepping into the 21st Century.
Once this vision is defined, it is combined with sustainable design objectives to create a building responsive to both community and environmental concerns. It is the Firm€™s believe if First Nations People claim to have a close relationship the land we must walk the talk and ensure our buildings and infrastructure are designed to highest sustainable standards to set a precedent for all Canadians.

Recently I received notification that our campus is going to receive another award, this time from Washington, DC from the Society for College and University Planning and the American Institute of Architects' Committee on Education "Excellence in Planning" and "Excellence in Architecture" Awards Program. This Follows a number of other architectural awards including the British Columbia Lieutenant Governor's Award and the Canadian Governor's General's Award. I would like to acknowledge your tremendous contribution to NVIT through your work on our campus, Alfred.
During your involvement with Busby - Associates Architects, I know you were the lead Architect for the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology Project and involved with all its phases from schematic design to construction. Your Aboriginal background and sensitivity to the concerns of students, teachers, and Elders combined with sustainable objectives, knitted together energy efficienct strategies with local historical Aboriginal architecture. I understand this followed your belief that the First People are the custodians of the natural environment and should set precedents for development that respects the land.
Our campus continues to impress people whethter they come here as students, employees, or visitors. We take great pride in it. I will continue, as I have in the past, to strongly recommend you as an architect.

Modern British Columbia will celebrate its 150th Anniversary in 2008. We are all well aware of the past, but we also know that we are living in a time when there is a determined effort to reconcile the ancient past of First Nations who have lived on this land since time immemorial with a new day of respect and inclusion. I noted the plans recently for your neighbours to construct a Squamish and Lil€™wat Cultural Centre to be used for the 2010 Winter Olympics. It is designed by a distinguished young Aboriginal Architect Alfred Waugh who has won acclaim (Governor General and Lieutenant Governor€™s Medals of Excellence in 2002) for his outstanding design of the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology in Merritt, British Columbia. There are changes to be considered going on all around us, such a time demands that we too learn to see the world in new ways.
