The Canadian HIV Trials Network (CTN) is a federally funded, non-profit, national organization which was established in 1991. It is funded by CIHR (Canadian Institute for Health Research), and jointly sponsored by the University of British Columbia and Providence Health Care, Vancouver. The purpose of the Network is to develop treatments, vaccines and a cure for HIV diseases and AIDS through clinical trials. The Network is comprised of a national head office in Vancouver, six regional offices
and more than two dozen satellite sites. The head office is comprised of five programmes, Scientific and Industrial Liaison; Administration and Finance; Communications and Information; Data and Methodology; and Pharmacoeconomics. The programmes work with the regional offices and satellite sites to provide services and information and to coordinate clinical trials. The National Centre also liaises with industry partners and individual principal investigators to ensure the smooth development and implementation of clinical trials. Five standing committees oversee the CTN infrastructure and its trials. These committees meet to review protocols, monitor trial progress, establish research priorities, and debate policy issues. They also provide advice to the National Centre
and the regions to ensure all trials maintain the highest scientific quality and ethical integrity.
CTN has regional offices located in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and Vancouver and maintains a network of almost 30 clinics and hospitals actively involved in clinical research. The regions work closely with the HIV/AIDS community to ensure that up-to-the-minute trial information is available at all times. The CTN provides active clinical sites funding for their infrastructure costs, which ensures the continuity of clinical trial personnel, who assist the investigators in administering the trial, as well as recruiting and following trial volunteers.
More than 8,000 Canadians have participated in CTN sponsored clinical trials. The CTN also assists the private sector in compassionate access and expanded access programs for investigational agents.
