MGI Limited provides consulting expertise in the environmental
and earth sciences. The firm was incorporated in 1986 as
Maritime Groundwater Investigations Inc. and in 1994, the name
was changed to better represent its broadening geographic base
and expanding variety of services. The company serves clients
throughout New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and
Newfoundland with offices in Fredericton, NB, Dartmouth, NS and
St. John's, NL. The organization has a staff of approximately
sixty people. The services offered are within the categories of
environmental audits, environmental site assessments,
groundwater
studies, air quality evaluations, geotechnical/geoscientific
investigations, site remediation and construction inspection.
Environmental audits of operating and historical industrial
facilities, commercial properties and undeveloped sites have
been
completed for a range of industrial and municipal clients,
property managers, law firms and financial institutions to
identify areas of potential environmental concern which may
represent current or future liabilities. Supplemental
investigations to verify and quantify the potential
environmental
impact form the basis of the environmental site assessment.
These investigations into soil, groundwater and / or soil vapour
quality can involve test pit excavation, borehole drilling,
monitoring well construction and soil gas probe installation.
Representative samples are collected for physical and chemical
analysis to evaluate the environmental condition of the site.
Hydrogeological investigations to locate and develop water
supplies have been completed for a range of industrial and
municipal clients. These programs have incorporated
hydrogeological exploration including the use of remote sensing
and geophysical techniques, supervision of water well
construction and testing, analysis of aquifer characteristics,
design of production well parameters, and the prediction of
environmental impacts resulting from wellfield operation.
Contaminant hydrogeology projects have been completed for
several
major petroleum companies and for a range of private and public
sector clients. These studies have included environmental
assessments of petroleum storage/distribution centres and
highway
spills, and the design and implementation of site remediation
including soil vent systems, various water treatment approaches,
bioremediation methods and hybrid combinations. A range of
contaminant types have been assessed. Landfills, waste
management studies and related investigations have also been
completed.
Geological, geotechnical and earth science investigations are
also conducted by the firm. Expertise in mineral resource
exploration and evaluation is available for a range of
commodities including base metals, energy resources (oil, gas,
oil shale, coal, peat), industrial minerals (including
limestone,
gypsum, salt/potash, aggregate, and building stone) and various
other mineral commodities. Mapping of both bedrock and
surficial
geology, reserve estimation, evaluation of granular aggregate
resources for construction and surface and underground mineral
development programs are also offered. Geological and
geotechnical evaluations can be completed using a variety of
drilling techniques including deep drill engineering and
downhole
geophysics. A comprehensive range of geological/geotechnical
evaluation and consultation for foundations, earthworks, slope
stability, etc. for design, construction supervision and project
management is presently available.
Air quality evaluations, including stack gas emissions at
industrial sources, and indoor air quality monitoring are
another
type of service offered. These services are of interest to
industrial clients in various sectors including the paper
industry, asphalt plants, and similar sources. Environmental
audits, permit acquisitions, environmental impact reviews and
assessments, and similar activities are also within the range of
services.
This range of services combined with an experienced professional
staff and a geographic base across the Atlantic Provinces places
the company in a solid position for controlled growth in the
fields of the environmental and earth sciences.
