def SOL Productions is a Hip Hop dance and performance company with the goal of combining studio ethics with a fresh street style environment.
We give students and audiences the opportunity to experience dance forms not available in the traditional studio setting.
We offer intensive 9-month professional classes and 6-week recreational classes for ages 7 - adult. Professional instruction - authentic technique!
def SOL was named after, and in admiration of, new school Hip Hop artist Mos Def and the golden age Hip Hop group De la Soul. Characterized by Afrocentric stylings, these artists represent the more conscientious voice of Hip Hop, providing an alternative to the ‘ignorant€™ gansta rap that has become so popular today.
In the same way, def SOL aims to promote awareness of the Hip Hop culture and take it back to its roots where it originated --- as an outlet for positive self expression. As for the spelling, the name def SOUL was already taken therefore ‘SOL€™, the Spanish word for sun, was interchanged to represent the rise of true and original Hip Hop.
def SOL continues to be the first and only company in Saskatoon focusing on the instruction and mastery of Hip Hop - street dance techniques.
Enrolments and requests for performances are consistently increasing as awareness of our authenticity and professional- ism expands across Saskatchewan.
Choreography by def SOL's Artistic Director, Amanda Murray aka BGirl M-Rae, is fresh and appealing to all ages. Her style focuses on street techniques that fuse raw, energetic street dance forms with cool video styles. Using street and studio training, Amanda has choreographed several medal-winning dances for competitions such as Dance Power, Quill Plains and the Pulse in addition to presenting works at numerous local events.
Since the 2004/05 season, def SOL€™s annual Hip Hop show, ‘Street Stylez€™ has brought Hip Hop dance and culture to a larger audience by combining original and entertaining student performances with guest appearances by local DJs, MCs, Graffiti Artists and B-Boys.
