Operating name: Engine Control Systems
Engine Control Systems (ECS), as the world's leading supplier of
exhaust emission control technologies, delivers its products and
services to the worldwide highway, mining , construction and
industrial markets through its operations in North America,
Europe, South Africa, and Australia. ECS has increased its
strength by becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Lubrizol
Canada Limited, who is the recognized leader in the area of
chemical additives for engine lubricants and fuels.
ECS products are installed as standard OEM components
on almost every new machine that goes into underground hardrock
mining applications.
In highway applications, ECS products are specified and sold
through the Detroit Diesel Corporation dealer network in North
America for urban bus applications.
ECS product line incorporates Diesel Catalytic Purifiers,
Purimufflers, Purifilters®, Stainless-steel Silencers, Jet Flow
Fume Diluters, and Water Scrubbers. Standard exhaust components
are also provided through newly acquired subsidiaries,
Shuttleworth Exhaust Systems and Ex-Air (both now known as
Engine Control Systems).
ECS introduced the leading-edge "AZ Diesel Purifier Technology"
into the worldwide mining industry. Being the new generation
diesel emission control system, AZ Technology is designed to
operate even at low exhaust temperatures and reduce up to 50% of
the total Particulate Matter (PM) while reducing up to 95% of
the Carbon Monoxide (CO) and 90% of the total Hydrocarbon
emissions (HC).

Technology:
AZ Diesel Purifier is designed to control both the gaseous and
the particulate emissions. AZ Diesel Purifiers will reduce up to
95% of the Carbon Monoxide (CO) and also up to 90% of the engine
out Hydrocarbon (HC) emissions which usually cause a disturbing
odor, eye and throat irritations. Besides the gaseous
emissions, the AZ diesel purifier is also capable of reducing
the overall particulate emissions by 45-50% by oxidizing the
Soluble Organic Fraction (SOF) of the Diesel Particulate Matter
(DPM). The catalyst is designed in a manner, which minimizes the
oxidation of nitrous and sulfurous compounds. Another unique
feature of the AZ technology is that it is capable of reducing
the exhaust emissions at lower exhaust temperatures. This is
very important when dealing with the new generation electronic
engines that run much cooler than the traditional mechanically
governed engines.
Catalyzed Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) are designed to
remove up to 95% of the total particulate (soot) emitted from a
diesel engine. The particulate is simply trapped in the ceramic
wall-flow type filter and then burned-off at temperatures as low
as 400°C. The burning process of the soot is called
the "Regeneration" of the filter. The main condition for the
best performance of a particulate filter is that the overall
engine-out exhaust temperatures have to be over 400°C for at
least 25% of the overall operating cycle of the vehicle. This
will ensure that the frequent regeneration occurs and the
exhaust system backpressure remains at low levels. Prior to the
installation of any particulate filter, it is recommended that a
temperature tracing be performed to determine whether the
vehicle would meet the temperature criteria. If necessary, fuel
soluble additives can be coupled with the catalyzed particulate
filters to assist in the regeneration process.
Fume Diluters are used when there is a need to dilute the engine
out exhaust gases. The dilution rates can be as high as 15:1.
As the exhaust gas passes through the manifold annular gap it
accelerates over an aerofoil surface creating an area of low
pressure. Then the ambient air is induced into the diluter to
mix with the primary exhaust gas. The two gas flows mix
together causing a rapid dilution and cooling that results in a
jet of diluted air. Although they do not destroy any pollutant,
the fume diluters are very efficient in preventing the build up
of high concentrations of pollutant in the vicinity of the
operator and the vehicle.
Fume diluter dilutes and cools the exhaust gas under any engine
condition. Quick dilution of nitric oxide (NO) gas to
concentrations less than 30 ppm by volume greatly reduces the
risk of oxidation and the resultant formation of oxides of
nitrogen (NOx).
Because of the lower exhaust temperature, the risk of igniting
inflammable material or increase in the ambient temperature is
significantly reduced. Another particular feature of a fume
diluter is that the total exhaust flow is projected as far as 50
feet away from the operating site. They require almost no
maintenance and have no operating cost.
