Success Stories: Consumers Gas: Development of an Automated Tooling System for Steel Pipe Service Abandonment - Cutting off service connected to a cast iron or steel main is one of the most common operations performed by gas distribution maintenance crews. ESI has developed a "keyhole technology" based on an excavation procedure that allows the use of robotic tools to perform operations through a small circular excavation. This can be done with minimal labour and restoration costs by integrating remotely operated, keyhole compatible robotic systems in the operation.
Consumers Gas - Consolidated Edison Gas Company of New York: Development of an Automated Pipe Maintenance System - ESI has developed a novel technique to perform cast iron bell and spigot joint sealing from inside the pipe using a remotely controlled robot. The robot enters and travels along the interior of the pipe until a desired joint is reached, and then drills a hole into the joint spigot. Injecting an anaerobic sealant into the jute, packing off the joint, and thus replicating the repair procedure currently done externally, seals the joints automatically.
Defence R - D Canada (DRDC): Development of a Computer Controlled System for Dynamic Pressure Regulation of an Anti-G suit - An expert system was designed to assist in the development of anti-G protection measures for jet fighter pilots. The system is capable of data acquisition, data analysis, individual protection profile generation, and simulation. The major goal of the expert system is to automatically generate protection schedules (G-Suit and Mask pressure profiles) for each pilot based on his/her physiological status and various characteristics of the G-profile.
CIIRDF - Servotronix (ISRAEL): Development of a Modular and Reconfigurable Robotic System (MRR) - A modular reconfigurable robot series built up of modules that are assembled into various configurations. The modules are easily integrated into a configuration that would fit specific task requirements. ESI offers single joint (MRJ) and multiple joint (MRW) modules as part of the standard configuration.
RCMP: Development of an Explosives - Ordnance Disposal System (EOD) – Mobile robots cover a wide range of operational requirements related to the handling, manipulation and neutralization of explosives, ordnance, biochemical, biological, and other hazardous items.
Centre for Artificial Intelligence - Robotics, Ministry of Defence, INDIA: Development of a PC-104 Based Robot Controller - The Motion Controller is open-architecture and it can be used in various applications including robotics, automation, and process control.
Avasarala Automation Ltd., INDIA: Development of a Robot for a Vacuum Chamber application – A high precision (micron) robot for carrying an ion beam source for polishing large diameter mirrors for telescopes used by the military.
Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems, INDIA: Development of Eddy Current Testing of Nuclear Reactor Heavy Water Boiler – A robot for inserting Eddy current probes into nuclear reactor boilers to investigate the structural integrity of heavy water channels.
Defence Research Establishment - Suffield (DRES): Development of a Robotic Scanner for Mine Detection - An off-road mobile robot designed to detect landmines, including those with minimal metal content, and UXO. The system operates at high speed with minimum logistic burden and zero hazard level and it is designed to search for mines in on terrain with rich vegetation stones, sand, puddles and various obstacles.
