Technology:
The EnviroMetal Process is an in-situ method of treating
groundwater contaminated with volatile organic compounds
(VOCs). A typical in-situ configuration consists of a granular
iron permeable reactive barrier (PRB) placed across the flow
path of a VOC plume, as the plume flows along its natural
gradient through the PRB, the VOCs are destroyed, with non-toxic
end products. The granular iron PRB destroys typical
contaminants such as tetrachloroethene (PCE), trichloroethene
(TCE), vinyl chloride (VC) and trichloroethane (TCA) to non-
toxic end-products of ethene, ethane, methane and chloride ions.
The EnviroMetal Process is a mechanically simple, passive, long-
term and cost-effective technology which overcomes the
limitations of traditional pump-and-treat systems. It is a
destructive treatment process with no toxic end-products. For
in-situ applications, there is no energy consumption, no cost to
extract and dispose groundwater, and minimal operations and
maintenance cost. Where in-situ treatment is not feasible,
above ground treatment systems may represent an inexpensive
alternative to conventional treatment methods. Over a hundred
systems have been installed in the United States, Denmark,
Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Ireland, Australia
Japan and in the United Kingdom.
The technology has been considered as a cost-effective
alternative at over 800 sites world wide.
