Nature of Business: The EG - G Optoelectronic Components Division is a broad based
supplier of the most advanced optoelectronic components, from
the
ultra-violet to the far infrared. Products include emitters,
detectors, flashlamps, photocells, lasers, power supplies and
electronic imaging devices for instrumentation, military and
aerospace, biomedical, surveillance and telecommunications
applications. The Vaudreuil, Montreal facility manufactures a
broad range of PIN and avalanche photodiodes (APDs) and
receivers, and quantum well and MQW injection lasers and LEDs.
Major Achievements: The development of multiplication theory for silicon APDs
(1966)
was critical in establishing EG - G as the world leader in
production of these devices. Further work led to the production
of low noise, silicon, reach-through APDs for the wavelength
range 500nm to 1060nm (1970) and another version with enhanced
response at 1060nm (1980). The work continued with the design
and
development of low noise, silicon, reach-through, multi-element
APDs (1974). Eventually it became possible to make very low
noise APDs with sufficient gain to allow production of photon
counting modules (1989).
Since the 1980's EG - G has designed and developed InGaAs APDs and
lasers for range finding applications and optical communications.
Company Background: EG - G Inc. was founded over 45 years ago by three MIT
technological pioneers whose early work in "stop motion"
analysis
became the basis for the first patent on stroboscopes and the
beginning of EG - G. Harold (Doc) Edgerton, Kenneth F.
Germeshausen
and Herbert E. Grier, whose initials form the company name,
launched their tiny company from a converted garage in Boston
where a variety of research and development contracts resulted
in
patents that subsequently allowed expansion into military and
commercial markets. Today EG - G Inc. is a global technology
company that provides complete systems as well as products to
medical, aerospace, semiconductor, photographic and other
industries. It delivers skilled support services to government
and industrial customers. Based in Wellesley, Massachusetts,
EG - G
has annual sales of $2 billion and more than 13,000 employees
worldwide. The Vaudreuil facility was originally set up by RCA
in
1985 and drew together the detector operation, already based in
Montreal, and the emitter operation, based in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania. The facility was bought by EG - G in 1990 to
complement its developing, optoelectronic business.
Business Description: EG - G Optoelectronics Components Canada manufactures photodiodes
and emitters for a wide range of optoelectronic applications.
The
photodetector range consists of p-i-n photodiodes, avalanche
photodiodes and hybrid photodiode-preamplifier modules with
spectral response ranges between 200nm and 1700nm. These devices
are available with and without integral light pipes and optical
fibers.
The emitters are available with both surface and edge emitter
structures covering a range of emission wavelengths from 800nm
to
1700nm. Single and double heterostructures as well as quantum
well injection lasers are available in various package
configurations with or without optical fibers.
