As a result of the Auto Pact, The Ford Motor Company began
construction of the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in May of 1966. A
year and a half later the first car, a Ford Falcon, rolled off
the St. Thomas Plant assembly line. A total of 45,000 cars were
manufactured in the first year of production.
Over the years, the St. Thomas plant has undergone a great many
expansions, modifications and improvements to increase the level
of production and continue their dedication to "top quality"
production and "zero defects" (plant mottos since operations
began). In 1998, the company produced a record 269,060 cars.
Major plant improvements since 1988 include investments in a
state-of-the-art clear-coat enamel painting system; West Bay
robotic automation for body build-up; and an In Line Vehicle
Sequencing system. More improvements are planned for the next
several years, including a major upgrade to the Phosphate, E-Coat
and Prime systems in the Paint Area. The plant now covers an
impressive 2.3 million square feet and the reputation the plant
established at its inception for being a technological front
runner has been maintained.
The cars built at the St. Thomas plant - the Crown Victoria nd
Grand Marquis - are sold not only to the North American market
but to a much larger global community. They are a major
contributor of export sales to the Canadian economy. In addition
to making their mark as quality luxury cars the Crown Victoria
and Grand Marquis have become the cars of choice for police
departments worldwide and are used by forces as far away as Saudi
Arabia and Moscow.
Over it's history, the St. Thomas Assembly Plant has proven its
ability to meet challenges of the past. With its
modern technology - and traditional pride in workmanship - it is
clearly ready to meet the challenges of the future.
