Geo-Resources initiatives in the field of GPS satellite
technology have provided government and private industry with
horizontal and vertical control for topographical and
photogrammetric mapping. Advanced bathymetric surveys using
sophisticated multibeam swath echo sounders, heave, roll and
pitch sensors, automated hydrographic data acquisition and
processing systems is further evidence of GRI's commitment to
excellence. Moreover, GRI was the leading contractor involved
with the development of a Canadian Ocean Mapping System for
the domestic and export service.
This system, which is one of the most technologically advanced
ocean mapping systems in the world, consists of a
Canadian-built Remote Controlled Vehicle called DOLPHIN (Deep
Ocean Logging Platform with Hydrographic Instrumentation and
Navigation) equipped with differential GPS technology for
precise navigation and positioning, and integrated with the
Simrad EM100 Multibeam Sounding System that can sweep the
ocean floor to depths of up to 600 metres, providing total
bottom coverage. A Specialized Handling System designed and
developed in Canada, can safely launch and recover the DOLPHIN
in sea state 5, thereby extending the sea time operations to
the maximum, hence adding to its cost effectiveness.
DOLPHIN is a diesel-powered seven metre long torpedo shaped
vehicle which runs four metres below the ocean's surface at
speeds of up to 14 knots, with only a mast and antenna showing
above the sea surface. Using the DOLPHIN Multibeam System
there is no longer the requirement for a specialized ship, and
bottom coverage increases to 100 percent. Consequently, the
multibeam system with its wide swath technique can collect
more bathymetric data than a conventional single beam system
and several times faster.
With the DOLPHIN/EM100 Ocean Mapping System, GRI can complete
surveys several times more quickly than using the conventional
single beam system and yet requiring up to one-third the
number of personnel, thereby achieving significant cost
reduction for surveys and map production. Furthermore, the
sheer volume and consistency of data which is collected and
processed in digital form makes it possible to produce maps
and data sets with an accuracy and resolution which have never
before been achievable. Typical applications for the DOLPHIN
System include, pipeline route surveys, harbour entrance
surveys, offshore oil and gas site surveys, hydrographic
surveys of exclusive economic zones, fisheries seabed mapping
and other coastal and ocean resource mapping projects.
Geo-Resources Inc. has provided ocean mapping services to the
United States Department of the Navy near Norfolk, Virginia,
and is actively pursuing similar projects in Canada and South
East Asia. The company is teaming with Canadian, U.K. and
other European interests in providing one of its three
DOLPHIN's and expertise to determine the feasibility of the
DOLPHIN as a scientific platform for fish stock assessment
surveys.
