Unique Applications: Region of Peel - Transfer System Program
Haul-All Transtors are the cornerstone of the Region€™s CRC (Community Recycling Centre) drop-off stations. Designed to maximize diversion after the closure of the Region€™s Brittania landfill, the 5 CRC systems are expected to divert over 40,000 tons (44,800 tonnes) per year from local landfills.
- TS500 Transtor units are used to contain and transfer municipal solid waste, yard waste, drywall, cardboard, mixed recyclables and tires. The TS500 units were selected for several reasons including the ability to provide fully sealed, closed containment of wastes and the speed of trailer loading using the unique ability to high side load collection trailers.
- To ensure efficient transportation, 100 cubic yard (76.5 cubic metre) high compaction transfer trailers are fully integrated into the Transtor system. These trailer units can stand alone to be loaded using a hydraulic power package or they can be dumped conventionally by the transfer tractor€™s PTO system. Depending upon commodity, transport loads from 20 to 30 tons (22 to 33 tonnes) are common. This equates to packing loads up to 7 times higher than conventional roll-off containers.

Success Stories: If you build bins, they will recycle...
With the passage of Pennsylvania's Act 101 in July 1988, all communities with more than 5,000 residents were required to recycle. As curbside collection programs emerged within Pennsylvania's urban communities, many rural communities launched voluntarily local drop-off recycling programs using mobile roll-off containers.
According to Dan Grow, Solid Waste and Recycling Coordinator of Schyukill County (Pottsville, Pennsylvania), the system was very inefficient. "The major problem with the roll-off system was density. We weren't hauling good volumes of materials," says Grow. Other problems included high contamination rates due to the larger openings on the roll-off containers and not enough convenient drop-off locations. To remedy these problems, Schuykill and eleven other counties across Pennsylvania turned to Haul-All's (Lethbridge, Alberta) integrated recycling system.
With the mobile roll-off system, Schuylkill County handled approximately 1,200 tons per year. In 2001, the first year following the switch in equipment, that figure increased to almost 1,800 tons. "With this system, you double your load efficiency," says Grow.

Testimonial: "Possibly the best feature of the animal-proof bin system, [said Goin], is the fact that it works. Over the years, few animals are found in the town due to garbage being an attractant. Personally, I think everywhere from Bragg Creek to Whistler should have a system like this. They've shot a lot of bears in some areas, but we don't get bears that are habituated here."
