Operating name: Iris Power

Iris Power LP is a world leader in the use of partial discharges to detect problems with the stator insulation of generators and large motors. Studies indicate 40% of motor failures result from the aging of stator winding insulation. Iris offers sensors, instrumentation and software for online partial discharge testing. With products such as PDTracTM, , which collects data continuously and archives the results important for trending and comparison of similar machines, and CSMeterâ„¢ which detects broken rotor bars in induction motors and problems in driven components, Iris provides several systems for implementing a predictive maintenance program. With the recent acquisition of Adwel International, Iris€™ repertoire of products now include the widely used Electromagnetic Core Imperfection Detector (EL CID) instrument. The EL CID instrument is a safer, easier, low-power alternative to the ring flux (a.k.a. loop) test for measuring the integrity of stator cores. In addition to PDA and EL CID, Iris now offers the electronic Wedge Tightness Detector (WTD), Robotic Inspection Vehicle (RIV), Motor Core Tester (MCT), Corona Probe and Magnastart (a slip-ring motor starter). These products and services are used by utilities, motor rewind companies, heavy industrial users and manufacturers of large generators and motors.
As a result of the Adwel Acquisition, Iris is now positioned to better serve a broad spectrum of the global electrical testing - measurement market. Through merging the IRIS leadership in Partial Discharge Analysis (PDA) testing with the ADWEL expertise in Stator Core testing of generators - motors, clients will now have direct access to the widest selection of on-line and off-line insulation, stator core and T - D testing products and services in the electric power industry.

Success Stories: Iris Power€™s Hydro Flux Monitor has been selected for a 2006 R - D 100 award by the independent judging panel and editors of R - D Magazine as one of the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace in the past year.
The Hydro Flux Monitor was developed jointly by Iris Power, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) as a result of research funded by NYPA and EPRI in 2002 to develop an algorithm for monitoring flux in hydrogenerators. The technology developers who produced the final product are Iris Power€™s Steve Campbell (VP, Research) and Mark Susnik (Manager, Development); Shalom Zelingher (Chief Technology Development Officer) and Gary Proulx (Electrical Superintendent) from NYPA, and Jan Stein (Senior Project Manager) from EPRI.
Until the Hydro Flux Monitor was released, there was no available continuous, on-line monitoring technology to detect the presence of shorted turns in the field poles installed on the rotors of hydrogenerators. A hydrogenerator is an electric generator driven by waterpower. The generator consists of a stationary component (the stator) and a rotating component (the rotor). Any problem that can result in an unbalance of the rotor could have catastrophic consequences for the hydrogenerator. The Hydro Flux Monitor continuously analyzes flux patterns and provides an alarm when a shorted turn situation is detected.
There are several advantages to continuous and automated monitoring. It allows measurements to be made without the time and expense of sending personnel to a plant. Overall test costs can be reduced and staff utilization increased. Its installation could provide significant cost benefits for hydroelectric utilities, and ultimately benefit consumers through cost savings and the enhanced reliability of electricity supply.
Iris Power is very pleased to accept R - D Magazine€™s 2006 R - D 100 award, together with our project partners, for the design, development, test and production of the Hydro Flux Monitor.
