NATURE OF BUSINESS
Linear Systems Ltd., is a developer and manufacturer of OEM
communications products. Linear specializes in developing high
speed WAN cards and software for use in data communications for
satellite modern, T1, multiple T1, Fractional T3, DVB. Our
products are used for general data communications and MPEG video
transmission. Linear also produces an MPEG Transmission system
and a Video conferencing system which use it`s communications
cards and software.
COMPANY BACKGROUND AND HISTORY
Linear Systems Ltd., is a privately owned Canadian company which
was formed in 1979 to provide computer and instrumentation
support for the Potash Industry. Linear designed and installed
custom computer control systems for monitoring concentration and
transporting and storing potash.
Linear began to manufacture computer boards for Multibus
computers, which were needed for potash applications, including
real time calendar clocks, non-volatile memory, I/O boards, and
serial communications cards. Linear began to market these boards
to OEMs in 1981. In 1983 Linear began to market it`s products in
the USA through Computer Modules, Inc., a company located in
California. Communications cards became a main product by 1990.
Linear`s boards were used in many applications including
satellite receiving stations, the receiving station for the
Galelao Probe, and early market testing for Video on Demand. In
1996, Linear Systems was registered to conform with the ISO
9001:1994 quality system. As a result of this early experience
with MPEG video, linear began to market computer boards and
software specifically for this niche.
More recently, Linear has developed systems based on it`s
communications hardware and software. This includes the MPEG
Shuttle, which is an MPEG transmission system for sending video
over satellite or T1/E1 lines and a point to point Video
conferencing system based on MPEG 1 which uses a single T1 line.
Linear is currently expanding it`s line of boards to support the
DVB protocol and is extending it`s line of WAN cards to support
T3 and Sonet speeds.

TECHNOLOGY PROFILE
Linear Systems Ltd. develops board level products for PCI and ISA
bus computers. These boards are designed using surface mount,
multi-layer technology and are designed for high volume
manufacturing processes. Linear assemblies and tests it`s cards
at it`s plant in Winnipeg.
Linear has developed WAN Network cards with standard daughter
card (IM Module) interfaces which include EIA-530, RS-422, V.3,
X.21, RS-449, RS-422 and HSSI. Linear has also developed a T1
interface IM Module. The WAN cards can accept two IM Modules
which gives two channels per card. Data rates up to 13.3M
bits/second are possible, DVB cards are also available for
general data transport and for MPEG compressed video
applications.
Linear has developed a comprehensive range of Windows NT 4 and
Windows 95/98 drivers for the WAN cards, NDIS drivers provide
standard interfaces for general purpose network applications.
Specialized Kernel drivers for Win NT provide interfaces for HDLC
framed data transport, or for MPEG Stream transport. Equivalent
Win 95/98 VXDs have also been developed.
Linear has developed technology for transporting MPEG over
satellite or T1 lines. This technology includes: - Use of TCP/IP or UDP for MPEG or data transport in Network
applications
- Use of HDLC framing for MPEG transport from point to point
- Transmission of raw MPEG streams with no framing, half duplex
mode
- DVB transport of MPEG point to point half duplex.
Linear has developed new products based on it`s MPEG networking
technology.
- MPEG Conf: a full duplex MPEG Video conferencing over a single
T1 line
- MPEG Shuttle: a point to point MPEG transport system for
transmitting live video or video files from point to point.
- T1 Multiplexer: a system for transmitting a DVB MPEG stream
over multiple T1 lines, then converting back to DVB.
