Mine Radio Systems Inc. (MRS) was established in 1985 to address
the underground radio communication market in the mining
industry. In 1992, Ken Morrell and Patrick Waye bought the
company from its founder. After the transfer of ownership, MRS
has expanded its customer base from a mostly Canadian market
to many other regions of the world.
Products
In 1987, MRS introduced the first leaky coaxial cable
underground radio system in Canada. The MRS system available at
that time was a reliable two-channel radio system, trade
name "FD4". The FD4 system was installed in many Inco.,
Falconbridge and Placer dome mines.
In 1992/1993, a multi-channel underground radio system (Flexcom)
was developed. Capable of handling voice, data and video
signals, the Flexcom system can carry up to 48 radio channels,
of which 32 are voice/data channels and 16 are video channels.
For installation in harzardous areas, such as coal mines, the
Flexcom system is certified by the Canadian Government (CANMET)
to be intrinsically safe. Intrinsically Safe Certification has
also been granted in Australia (SIMTARS), South Africa (SABS),
USA (MSHA), China (MOC), United Kingdom (SIRA), India (CMRI) and
Russia (MOS CERTIUM). Patents on the Flexcom system and
the next generation system have been applied for in the USA,
Canada, Australia and South Africa. In USA and South Africa,
the patents have been granted.
Flexcom system components are manufactured to high quality
standards. All Flexcom components are manufactured along ISO
9001:2000 quality guidelines. MRS is an authorized Motorola
radio, data and pager equipment dealer, providing high quality
radio equipment.
MRS also commits to on-going product R - D programs to introduce
new products and to improve existing equipment for the mining
industry. The Canadian Research Council has been providing
assistance to MRS in its R - D efforts.
