Operating name: NRC, Institute for Microstructural Sciences
Overview
The Institute for Microstructural Sciences (IMS) is a
government laboratory at the National Research Council.
Vision
IMS will be recognized as a global leader in discovering quantum, electronic, and photonic properties of leading edge and emerging materials, developing devices and integrating them into complex IT-enabled systems delivering technology solutions for Canadians.
Mission
IMS uniquely applies its leading-edge capability in photonics, quantum- and nano-technologies to transfer its discoveries and technology development into deliverable prototypes and integrated system solutions for health, environment, energy, security, information and communication sectors.
IMS partners globally with industry, academia, government departments and agencies to deliver industrially relevant R - D and the opening of new market opportunities. IMS is aligned with NRC€™s vision to ‘put science at work for Canada€™.
Organization
IMS has 11 functional groups which work in
collaboration with each other on projects in support of industry sectors critical for Canada, including information and communications technologies, energy and lighting, biomedical and health, defence, security and space, and the environment. These program areas which are subdivided into major projects, are carried out with industrial or university partners. In addition to this research, the Institute provides fee-for-service test and characterization services as well as industrial grade photonics prototyping and low-volume manufacturing services through its Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre on a cost recovery basis. The Institute also licenses technology to companies and provides consulting services. The Institute also manages an Industrial Partnership Facility (incubator) where small firms or start-ups who need to access the capabilities of the Institute can rent laboratory or office space at market values.
Industrial Involvement
The Institute operates in partnership with many
industrial companies and with other government agencies, notably the Department of National Defence, the Canada Space Agency and Industry Canada (Communications Research Centre). The principal economic impact of IMS is derived form collaborative research and development projects with industry. The Institute generates revenue or in-kind assistance of over $4M per annum.
