The National Research Council (NRC), Canada's leading research and development organization, is dedicated to bolstering the strength of the Canadian economy by working with industry to create
innovative products and processes in markets with exciting growth potential. The NRC operates 18 institutes across Canada. The Certified Reference Materials Program (CRMP), formerly the
Marine Analytical Chemistry Standards Program (MACSP) was established in 1976 by the NRC in response to needs of government for certified standards and reference materials that would enable analysts to monitor pollutants in the environment.
The Certified Reference Materials primary objective is to develop methodology, reference materials and standards that will help
analysts obtain more accurate determinations of trace elements and organic compounds in a variety of matrices. Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) are used by analytical laboratories for
instrument calibration and analytical method validation. CRMP and reference materials. The Program's methods and certified reference materials and standards are used by analysts worldwide. The Program is operated jointly by NRC's Institute for Marine Biosciences (IMB) in Halifax and NRC's Institute for National Measurement Standards (INMS) in Ottawa.
At IMB, analytical methods, reference materials and standards are developed for organic compounds including shellfish toxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). INMS's predominant role is to develop methods and reference materials for the determination of trace elements and other hazardous constituents in sediments, biological tissues
and waters.
