The Ontario Bean Producers Marketing Board (OBPMB)(Also known as
the Ontario White Bean Producers) was established in 1944 and
today represents approximately 2,000 white pea bean producers.
These producers are responsible for 90% of total Canadian white
pea bean production. The OBPMB adopted agency marketing and pool
pricing in 1967.
Agency marketing is a pooling arrangement which allows producers
to deliver white pea beans (also known as navy beans and alubias
chicas) to the dealer of their choice. The producer receives an
initial payment, followed by additional payments as the Board
sells the crop during the marketing year. The Board markets the
Ontario bean crop through a network of six licensed exporting
companies to more than 70 countries worldwide. On average, 80%
of production is exported. Coloured beans are not part of this
pooling arrangement and are traded under contract between
producers and dealers.
The mandate of the Ontario Bean Producers' Marketing Board is: 1. To provide direction for the orderly marketing of white pea
beans;
2. To ensure a reasonable return to the producers;
3. To maintain continuity of supply of quality white pea beans
to domestic and export markets.
Throughout each crop year, the OBPMB participates in promotional
export activities into new markets in the world, to maintain
relationships with established markets, to gather information to
help in these endeavours and to increase exposure for our
value-added bean products.
Consuming low fat, high fibre white pea beans is an excellent way
to reduce chancesof suffering various types of cancer, heart
disease and stroke.
The trend of eating white pea beans is on the rise because of the
awareness consumers now have of the health benefits of including
legumes in their diets.
