My husband and I bought our first boat last year to have some fun with our kids. We were sold the boat, trailer and engine and soon found out that the engine needed work. We took it to Ontario Boat and Engine works in Orangeville to Peter Goodwin who had the boat for a hefty period of time. Work was eventually done (Supposedly with a 1 year guarantee). We paid $1388.61 for this work. When we finally got the boat back off him after many weeks of waiting patiently, we managed to get out 3 times before the engine went wrong again, this time we believe it blew a piston. When we spoke to him about it he first tried to blame us for using the wrong fuel/oil mix, which we had not as we had bought the correct measuring devise to ensure we got it right. Eventually he agreed to repair the piston but before long the end of the season was upon us and it had not been carried out. We put the boat in storage for winter with him assuring us that he would be out there in the spring to start work on the engine. After many phone calls where he kept insisting that he had not had chance to get out there we picked the boat up and dropped it off with him. ( This would be around beginning of June). We left with his assurance that it would get done. Just under four weeks later ( around July 12 or 13th) we finally gave up and collected the boat from him as he had not made any attempt to make repairs. We took it to another repair place that has since been recommended to us who have told us that the repairs needed to be carried out would be over $2000.00 and that the work carried out by the first place was not good, to say the least. We believed that we were using a reputable mechanic as the sign on his place of work claims he is a Mercury/Mercruiser certified mechanic, and he also has stamped on our copy of the invoice, 'Mercury Outboards'.
