The original objectives established for our non-profit organization are: * To ensure that Public interest remains a foremost consideration in our efforts to regulate the Paralegal profession.
* To establish a Paralegal society that will attract the allegiance and support of all Paralegals in Ontario.
* To develop a meaningful working relationship with the Province of Ontario in creating a province-wide institutional structure which will ensure that the highest level of service is provided by all Paralegals in Ontario.
* To develop acceptable working standards and minimum professional requirements for all Paralegals offering services to the public.
* To work with Public and private sector educators in Ontario to formulate relevant applied skills training for Paralegals.
* To develop an accreditation/certification program to qualify Paralegals for practice in Ontario.
* To establish an administrative unit to administer accreditation/certification and to monitor the professional conduct of all accredited/certified Paralegals.
* To establish a dialogue and working relationship with the legal profession and justice administration officials for the specific purpose of promoting the professional status of Paralegals as qualified legal services providers.
* To urge the Attorney General to enact legislation which will recognize the legitimate professional status of both established and emerging Paralegal service areas.
* To urge the Attorney General to enact legislation that clearly defines the practice of law and the role of a barrister and solicitor.
* To urge the Attorney General to transfer the power to prosecute the individuals engaged in the unauthorized practice of law from the Law Society of Upper Canada to the Ministry of the Attorney General.
* To act as the official voice of Paralegals and, where in the best interests of the society, the official advocate for individuals or designated groups of Paralegals.
* To offer Paralegals the benefits of group purchasing power in areas of, errors and omissions Insurance, health insurance, legal texts, education programs, computer software, etc.
In 2008 regulation of the paralegal profession in the Province of Ontario came into effect.
The Law Society of Upper Canada is now responsible for the licensing and regulation of paralegals. They have set standards for paralegal practice that are similar to those which they have in place for lawyers practicing in Ontario.
In this new regulatory environment the Paralegal Society of Ontario
* Actively engages with departments of the Law Society and with its Paralegal Standing Committee, as an advocate on a wide scope of issues affecting the regulation of the paralegal profession and the public's access to justice.
* Advocates with government bodies and the Law Sociey for the expansion of the permitted scope of practice of paralegals, to provide the public with access to qualified paralegal representation as an alternative to self-representation or engaging the services of a lawyer.
* Provides education and mentoring programs to its members, to promote and sustain high standards of professionalism amongst our members and help them manage their practices effectively.
* Promotes awareness of the profession and of emerging issues that affect or may affect the public's access to justice and the ability of paralegals to provide effective legal services to the public.
* Advocates for changes to legislation and the rules and procedures of the courts and tribunals where paralegals practice, to improve the administration of justice.
