The transgenic animal technology is an emergent solution for the production of recombinant proteins of pharmaceutical and biomedical interest that cannot be or are inefficiently produced using conventional systems based on genetically engineered microorganisms and animal cells. This platform offers the high protein synthesis capabilities of the mammary gland, the ease to collect milk compared to other body fluids, relatively low operation costs compared to standard bioreactors, an environmentally friendly energy source (hay and grain as opposed to electricity) and the potential to virtually unlimited expansion of the production herd through established and emerging methods of animal husbandry.
