Phoenix Biomedical was founded in 1980 expressly to manufacture
high-quality, sterile petri dishes. Today, Phoenix has become
the industry leader and the supplier of choice for major
distributors, diagnostic device manufacturers and research
institutions. We attribute our success to our commitment in
providing the health care and scientific communities with quality
and environmentally friendly petri dishes.
Our state-of-the-art plant in Mississauga, Ontario, with its
class "10-100" clean rooms, is considered the finest petri dish
facility in the world producing 200 million plates per year
sold in 50 countries. In the last 6 years alone, Phoenix
Biomedical has marketed over one billion plates produced in its
microbiologically controlled facility.
All Phoenix Biomedical petri dishes are made of crystal-clear,
virgin, high molecular medical grade polystyrene produced by an
ISO 900 certified company. All dishes are sterile and
particulate-free. Each lot undergoes a thorough testing
conducted by an independent microbiological testing laboratory
before sterility certificate is issued. The testing procedure
follows USP XXIII, the highest pharmaceutical sterility standard.
Phoenix Biomedical adheres strictly to all GMP requirements and
is FDA and ISO 9002-94 registered.
Product and packaging development plays major roles in our
business strategy. Of particular interest is the development
and marketing of STARâ„¢DISH, an innovative, environmentally
friendly line of petri dish that is fast replacing the
inefficiently designed conventional dishes. The patented
technology incorporated in STARâ„¢DISH allows a reduction of up to
35% in the amount of plastic used to manufacture each dish, thus
further reducing disposal waste and cost.
The "Eco-pack" 600 dishes per case, versus the standard 500 per
case packaging configuration, allows 23% reduction in cardboard
and packaging materials thus offering an additional solution to
reduce medical packaging waste.
The STAR DISH is the only laboratory product that has been
awarded the "ECO-LOGO" Environmental Seal of Approval; the most
prestigious award granted by the Canadian Government to
environmentally responsive products.

Technology:
Since the invention of the first glass petri dish by German
bacteriologist, Julius R. Petri (1852-1921) through the
introduction of the first plastic single-use petri dish in the
1960's up to the early 1990's when petri dish weighing 16 to 18
grams became the industry standard, very little changes or
innovation in the technology took place. Not until 1993 when
Phoenix Biomedical's team of engineers and researchers
developed, perfected and patented a new generation of petri
dishes, the STAR DISH series.
The innovative technology incorporated in the environmentally-
friendly STAR DISH series allows a reduction of up to 35% in the
amount of plastic used to manufacture each dish, thus
significantly reducing medical disposal waste and cost.
A flash-filling method is used in manufacturing STAR DISH. In
this process, the plastic enters the mould cavities from the
centre of the dish and runs rapidly through low-profile ribs
that act as flow leaders which allows the plastic to flow in a
cobweb pattern and substantially reduce plastic stress during
filling of the mould cavities.
This patented unique process, the "combination of centre-gating
and ribs"" makes the STAR DISH resilient and less brittle than
conventionally designed side or edge-gated dishes and allows
substantial reduction in weight without sacrificing quality.
The ribs also act as stiffener to keep the bottom from warping
as flatness is a major quality requirement.
In addition, the clear ribs moulded in the dish provide a
useful border for making quadrants; it eliminates the need to
hand mark the plates that is routinely done by microbiologist
when performing colony count.
The STAR DISH makes an important contribution in support of
strategies to reduce medical plastic waste that is burdening
our global environment.
