THE COMPANY
Davis Engineering - Associates Limited (DEAL) was incorporated
in 1985 to provide engineering consulting, project management,
testing and inspection services to the public and private
sectors. Since that time, the firm has gained professional
expertise through a broad range of projects. Whether working on
a small venture, or a major infrastructure project DEAL brings
this expertise, experience and a commitment to excellence to
every undertaking.
DEAL offers a complete range of engineering services. These
include;
* Project and Construction Management
* Feasibility Studies
* Surveying
* Municipal Engineering
* Structural and Marine Engineering
* Environmental Engineering
* Transportation Engineering
* Building Engineering
* Materials Engineering, Testing and Inspection Services
* Remote Monitoring
* Energy Studies
* Fisheries and Resource Development
STAFF
The strength of our organization lies in its people. DEAL's
staff of eleven (11) Professional Engineers is complemented by a
skilled group of technologists, technicians and administrative
support personnel.
DEAL staff are strong achievers who place the highest priority
on the needs of their clients. They have been carefully selected
for their experience, creativity, and high professional
standards. Their combined experience allows DEAL to undertake
every new project with competence and understanding.
EQUIPMENT - SOFTWARE
DEAL utilizes state-of-the-art computer and communications
technology. Computer aided drafting and design (CADD) stations,
digitizers and high speed plotters are used to produce
professional drawings quickly and efficiently. Surveys are
accelerated using electronic total station surveying equipment
and accompanying software which provides faster surveying and
drawing production. In remote areas, global positioning system
(GPS)equipment provides surveying coordinates.
Software programs are used extensively for project management
and design. Advanced packages for surveying, site development,
hydrology, pressure pipe design and analysis as well as
structural design in timber, steel and reinforced concrete reduce
design costs and time. Project costs are monitored by a
comprehensive computer program.
High speed internet access allow documents and drawings to be
quickly transferred between our office and that of our clients,
subconsultants and contractors. Field crews use the same
technology to forward data to the office on a daily basis. This
feature reduces design time and enhances project management.
INNOVATIONS
The company prides itself on its innovativeness and record of
achievement in the technology field. Some representative
examples are : * Sewage disposal
DEAL introduced the contour sewage disposal technique to
Newfoundland which was being used on mainland Canada. The firm
was successful in obtaining approval from the local Departments
of Environment and Health, and the system is now sanctioned as
an accepted method of disposal by the Department of Municipal
and Provincial Affairs.
* Pumping Systems
DEAL introduced submersible turbine pumping technology to
municipal water supply applications in Newfoundland as a means
of overcoming problems being experienced with vertical
turbines. It is now being used by many consultants and
municipalities as a standard for the industry.
* Wharf Design
DEAL developed a computer software program to automatically
design and draft cribwork wharf structures. The program prompts
the user to input design criteria and generates wharf drawing
and quantity/cost information automatically, allowing the
system to be quickly optimized, reducing the time and cost of
design using conventional techniques. This system is now used
in the design of public and private facilities.
* Concrete
DEAL designed an insulated container for quality control of
concrete testing. A prototype has been developed and tested.
* CADD
DEAL was one of the first Engineering companies in the province
to convert its drafting and design capabilities to computer
aided (CADD) operations. This was completed before the public
colleges introduced CADD to their curriculum.
* Computers
Based on its level of advancement in the computer field, DEAL
was contracted at the beginning of the Hibernia development to
provide the Owner with computerized drafting services and assist
in setting up a computer system at their head office in St.
John's. DEAL personnel continued to provide this service to the
Hibernia consortium until the completion of the construction of
the drill rig.
* Surveying
In 1991 DEAL added computerized total survey stations complete
with digital terrain modelling software to its equipment
inventory. This technology speeds up work, improves accuracy
and reliability, reduce the size of field crews and
permit many functions previously unavailable, such as three-
dimensional drawings, to be generated. This was again one of
the first systems of its kind to be introduced to the consulting
industry in the province, and was used on the Hibernia project
to provide state-of-the-art surveying, terrain modelling and
quantity calculation services, including three-dimensional views
of the finished construction site.
All of the aforementioned innovations have been made possible
through the firm's commitment to staying abreast of new
technology. It also reflects the owner' willingness to adopt
new technologies where appropriate, rather than relying on
traditional equipment and procedures.
