Unique Applications: In-orbit Test Systems
Today's modern satellite communications payloads
rely on advanced digital signal processing
techniques that offer extreme flexibility in
signal routing through the satellite network.
SED's IOT systems are equally flexible, able to
validate performance in all operational
configurations, regardless of frequency and power
level changes.
New generation low- and medium-earth orbit
satellites can be in view of a ground station for
only minutes at a time. Numerous complicated
measurements must be completed during these
limited times while compensating for factors
associated with satellite movement relative to
the ground station. SED's IOT systems have been
used successfully to test these new generation
satellites.
SED's IOT systems have pioneered multi-carrier
measurement techniques, where a large number of
signals can be transmitted to the satellite at
the same time. This technique more closely
approximates the normal traffic the satellite
will see when put into service and permits the
measurement of many parameters at the same time,
further reducing test durations to get the
satellite into service sooner.
SED's test systems support a central control site
that can access measurement systems at remote
sites around the world over low bandwidth links.
This reduces the need to have trained staff
located at the remote sites and allows for a
concentration of expertise at the customer's main
facility.
SED was the first to deliver systems where a
signal transmitted from one earth station was
received and measured by another earth station
thousands of miles away.
SED continues to evolve its IOT product line to
meet future challenges associated with evolving
satellite communications programs that use higher
frequencies and more bandwidth to provide more
flexible service applications to a growing global
user base.
Satellite Gateways and Network Systems
The cornerstone of our success is the flexibility
of implementation. Designed to be easily
configured for varying traffic levels and unique
customer requirements, our systems can be easily
expanded as traffic grows. And, because of the
modular nature of the software, modifications to
add new services are simplified.

Success Stories and Unique Applications
Success Stories
In-orbit Test Systems
SED is a world leader in communication satellite
testing, having delivered In-orbit Test Systems
to the leading satellite manufacturers and
service providers around the world. These
customers depend on SED's expertise to
demonstrate that the heart of their multi-billion
dollar communications system is operating as
required. Despite competition from companies many
times its size, SED is enjoying increasing market
acceptance of its IOT systems. We are providing
systems to some of the largest satellite
manufacturers and operators around the world,
customers who are leading the way with new
generation commercial satellite programs. A
testament to the quality and utility of these
systems is the repeat business SED enjoys from
these customers as their program requirements
evolve to serve new global communications needs.
Satellite Gateways and Network Systems
The proliferation of new satellite communications
services for global and regional markets has
dramatically increased the demand for reliable
network inter-connectivity. SED has met the
demand with several innovative system solutions.
We are a leader in the supply of Access Control
and Signaling Equipment (ACSE) for Inmarsat M and
B services. SED was the first company in the
world to be awarded a contract for the supply of
an M/B ACSE and the first to have systems
carrying traffic in all four ocean regions. SED
has since provided M/B gateways to British
Telecom, Telstra (Australia) Singapore Telecom,
INDOSAT, and VSNL (India). We continue to work
closely with them to include new services such as
Mini-M and mailbox services, as they are defined
and implemented by Inmarsat.
Our Network Systems provide network-level support
and control of satellite communications systems.
Our Mobility Management systems provide a global
registry for all mobile terminals in Inmarsat's
global satellite communications network the
network to improve access efficiency for users.
Our Network Coordination Systems manage
Inmarsat's satellite resources by allocating
channels between the mobile terminals and the
land earth stations, ensuring that precious
network resources are utilized efficiently, to
improve performance for the user and
profitability for the operator.
