We have an unmatched cadre of light microscopes, featuring ultra-modern Olympus BX-series research microscopes outfitted with Nomarski Differential Interference Contrast (DIC) optics, fluorescence capability and high-resolution digital imaging systems. We operate as a fully-compliant Biosafety Level 2 laboratory, with facilities for the preparation, maintenance and storage of microbial cultures.
The Sporometrics lab has a dedicated walk-in incubator outfitted secondarily with a series of integrated specialized incubation chambers. As a culture collection registered with the World Federation of Culture Collections (WFCC) we are equipped with cryopreservation capabilities sufficient to maintain 25,000 living cultures indefinitely. Our WFCC acronym is SCCM. We have two on-site autoclaves for the preparation of sterile media and tools, and 100 cu ft of refrigeration capacity for maintaining a large inventory of freshly-prepared sampling and growth media.
In 2008 we added a dedicated molecular genetics laboratory, physically separated from the central laboratory that is equipped with germicidal UV sanitization. Our molecular lab is outfitted with a full suite of tools to support cutting-edge DNA fingerprinting, DNA sequence-based identification and real-time PCR detection of bacteria, fungi and viruses.

At Sporometrics, we take education and training seriously. Over two-thirds of our staff are degreed scientists, most with post-graduate training in mycology, microbiology and molecular genetics. Our senior scientific Staff, Dr. Scott and Dr. Summerbell, both hold professional certifications with the Canadian College of Microbiologists.
Sporometrics is accredited to the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard by the American Industrial Hygiene Association Laboratory Accreditation Programs, LLC. AIHA accreditation represents the single most comprehensive and widely recognized international credential in the performance of environmental microbiological laboratory analyses of a range of matrices from the built environment.
All of our staff analysts are certified by the Pan-American Aerobiology Certification Board (PAACB) through a process involving a series of rigorous examinations demonstrating their knowledge and skills in microscopic identification of fungal spores and knowledge of fungal taxonomy, ecology and sampling methodologies. Unlike laboratory proficiency testing and accreditation programs which evaluate the overall performance of a laboratory, the PAACB program submits each and every analyst to a rigorous set of examinations, ensuring uniformity and excellence for every individual who passes to become certified and receives a PAACB stamp. At Sporometrics, our 6-month analyst trainee program partners new employees with senior analysts, allowing them to become familiarized with laboratory procedures and identification techniques. Our internal training program takes each analyst trainee through a series of internally-delivered examinations to test their knowledge of theory and practice. The culmination of our internal training program is the PAACB examination process, which provides external quality assurance on the knowledge and skills of our analysts.
