Company Profile
Since our beginning in 1912 as one of Alberta€™s first surveying companies, Stewart, Weir - Co. Ltd. has steadily grown into a multi-disciplinary organization offering professional services in land surveying, land information systems, urban and rural planning as well as municipal, environmental, and transportation engineering. Stewart Weir is able to draw on the integrated resources and expertise within the company to offer a valuable combination of services for our clients.
Integration means more efficient operations, better communication and the convenience of dealing with one experienced service provider. It also means we can bring in specifically trained people to match the needs of the project.
The synergy that exists with Stewart Weir provides for a proven, well organized corporate team that offers an integrated approach to the survey, engineering and mapping disciplines.
At Stewart Weir we have always taken the lead in adopting new technologies to help us deliver the best and most cost-effective solutions to our clients. This is why we were the first in Alberta to adopt computerized surveying techniques and data processing in the early 1960's. Embracing new technology has allowed us to become more efficient.
In the 1980€™s we were the first in North America with digital orthophoto capability. Today we are equipped with the latest in integrated survey technologies including Global Positioning Systems (GPS). For design we use the latest CAiCE (Computer Aided Civil Engineering) software.
We continue to lead in innovation with the recent addition of 3-D laser scanning technology, enabling us to perform specialized surveys in difficult or complex areas with results that are fast, safe, and with greater detail. In essence, Stewart Weir provides a wide variety of surveying and engineering services to our clients.
Surveying
At Stewart Weir, surveying is more than a job or a group of professionals providing skilled practice. It is a serious task that our personnel undertake with great pride. It is also a never-ending adventure that leads our people to the far-reaching locations where we are needed. The distances that we travel today to reach our jobsites seem almost inconsequential.
Today, you will find us working close to our offices throughout Alberta on projects that help to fuel our strong economy. But you will also find us performing surveys in the high Arctic, and throughout Canada and North America, as we are needed. Jobs that used to take three months to do may take three days to do now, thanks to technological advances.

• 2004 – Winner of the CEA Showcase Award of Merit in Project Management – for Highway 627 Realignment at TransAlta€™s Highvale Mine.
Stewart Weir€™s winning project involved providing engineering and project management expertise for the construction of the new Highway 627 alignment to allow for expansion of TransAlta€™s Highvale Mine. This mine is Canada€™s largest surface coal mine and produces over 12 million tonnes annually for use at TransAlta€™s Sundance and Keephills power plants.
Project management expertise was critical to ensure both the mine operations and road construction proceeded smoothly. In addition to working closely with the road contractor and TransAlta, several other stakeholders needed to be worked with. Throughout the project, liaison and coordination with all parties required a flexible and responsive project management approach.
Another consideration was the 37 m fill required to build the road over a mined out area of the pit. Because of the steep and unstable slopes of the pit, conventional survey techniques would be difficult and unsafe. Stewart Weir used state-of-the-art 3D laser scanning to safely and quickly gather survey data. This data was incorporated into roadway design software to complete accurate designs efficiently without endangering staff.
• 2003 – Winner of the CEA Showcase Award of Excellence in Natural Resources, Mining - Industrial – for Rotary Breaker: Precise Alignment Using IMS
Stewart Weir€™s challenge was to design a method to accurately monitor the placement of these three immense units weighing 108 tonnes each and spanning 17m, within tolerances of 1 mm in the x-y plane and 3 mm in the z direction.
Using in-house expertise and ingenuity to apply the latest Industrial Measurement System (IMS) technology, GPS positioning and 3D modeling, a methodology was designed and implemented. The end result was excellent, with the breakers being positioned within 0.6 mm in the x-y plane and 0.8 mm in the z direction, well within specifications.
• 2002 – Winner of the Project of the Year for Transportation – Small Project
The work involved grading, granular base course, asphalt concrete pavement (EPS), fencing and other work. Located in Strathcona County, the project commenced West of the Jct. of S.H. 824 and proceeded easterly for 5.12 kilometres to East of the Half Moon Lake Resort.
A co-project management approach (two project managers) was used on this project to provide supervision and consulting services as the contractor was using multiple spreads. Land and utility issues required an emphasis on community relations, as well, in consideration of environmental concerns, two wetland areas were enhanced as part of the construction.
• 2002 – Winner of the ARHCA Environmental Award Highway 43:1
