€œBuilding Bridges in Aboriginal Relations€?
Dave Kennedy is president of Strategic Aboriginal Consulting Inc., a company he founded in 2000. He brings more than a quarter century of experience working with public governments, the corporate sector, First Nation, Inuit and Métis governments and communities.
Dave believes the only way to a healthy future between public governments, aboriginal governments and the private sector is to build positive and sustainable relationships. He has been successful in reaching agreements benefitting both private proponents and aboriginal communities alike. He has represented resource sector businesses in negotiations with First Nations and has authored key strategy papers for business on treaty negotiations and about aboriginal consultation and accommodation.
Since opening his company Dave has worked on major private acquisitions and due diligence processes valued at up to $1.4 billion and led aboriginal consultation and accommodation processes and negotiations on major capital projects. He has undertaken aboriginal risk assessments and assessments of adequacy of consultation relating to multi-million dollar commodity purchase and sale agreements. He has also facilitated strategic planning processes for aboriginal governments and devised a new aboriginal governance structure and constitution through a community-based consultative process.
Dave€™s experience includes 13 years with provincial governments where he led treaty, financial and other aboriginal negotiations and participated in meetings to reduce tensions at blockades. He led the redesign of the delegation of self-government powers to First Nations and through most of those years was responsible for federal/provincial/aboriginal discussions at the national level. Dave has advised premiers and ministers and represented provincial governments at national level aboriginal meetings, including talks on constitutional change. As executive director of the BC Treaty Commission, Dave was responsible for facilitating problem-solving for over 40 tripartite treaty negotiation tables.
He developed and delivers a First Nation relationship management training program and a First Nation relations skill building workshop for a major Crown Corporation. Also a sought after public speaker, he has spoken about aboriginal relations at natural gas, forestry and land management conferences as well as before university and industry audiences.
