Operating name: Recorder and Times
The Recorder and Times is an independent daily newspaper, one of
only 9 left in Canada. We publish as an evening paper, six days
a week. We do not publish Sunday.
Our circulation is 15,000 except for Friday, when our TV Travel
Times is included, along with a real estate section, and for this
day an additional 1400 copies are sold.
The newspaper began as a weekly in 1821, making it one of the
oldest continuing publications in the country, and we have been
daily since November 10, 1873.
In addition to The Recorder and Times, we are also Brockville's
largest Internet Service Provider, with 3,300 subscribers, and
all modems are modern 56k US Robotics, providing our dial up
customers with the fastest transmission speed available over
phone lines.
Our business also encompasses telephone directories (one for
Brockville and 12 other communities; the other for Dundas
County); Vacation Guide\magazines, calendars, Safe Community
Handbooks, and several other specialty products.
In 1990, Arthur Anderson - Co., in conjunction with Canadian
Business Magazine, chose us as one of the 50 best managed
privately owned companies in Canada.
Already in the fifth generation of the same family, our
involvement began in 1894 when George P. Graham, who was
appointed a Senator later in life, became the company's managing
director. He was the great grandfather of the current president,
Hunter S. Grant and the current Editor-in-Chief, Perry Beverley.
Three great great grandchildren of the Senator currently work at
the newspaper, and transition plans are in place to ensure that
The Recorder and Times can remain one of the rare independent
voices in the daily newspaper business.
