Sector:
Success Stories: Technology: Articulated Robotics
Application: Automate the distribution of
radioactive drugs
Mallinckrodt Medical Inc. which specializes in
the field of diagnostic medical products,
automated the distribution of radioactive drugs
to overcome a number of operational and safety
issues.
Traditionally the preparation of these doses has
been entirely done by hand. Consequently, safety
was an issue with the potential of radiation
exposure for the lab technician. Furthermore, the
work was slow and automation was seen as a way to
speed up the process, while providing accurate
quantities of radioactive drugs within critical
dose limits.
The solution was a CRS A251 robotic system
integrated by CRIQ (Centre Recherche Industriel
du Quebec). Mallinckrodt has realized the
following benefits of using a CRS Robot: Cycle times are now only 45 to 52 seconds per
dose, Technicians face greatly reduced radiation
exposure, Labour content and thus costs in
producing a sample have been reduced, Reduced
training costs, Measurable improvement in
quality.
Mallinckrodt is very happy with the system and is
considering adding a second system to cope with
the growing production demand.
