Tire Recycling Atlantic Canada Corporation TRACC (NB) is engaged
in the collection of used tires and the manufacturing of new
products from the recycled rubber.
TRACC (NB) began full-scale operations in October 1997.
management problem in Atlantic Canada.
TRACC has been awarded an exclusive contract by the New Brunswick
Government to manage scrap tires in the province. TRACC,
located in Minto, New Brunswick, is operating in a 40,000 square
foot facility which was constructed on a 16.5 acre site.
A sister company, TRACC (N.S.) Limited, has also been awarded
the contract for the exclusive right to collect and recycle
tires in Nova Scotia for five years.
New Brunswick disposes of approximately 800,000 scrap tires
annually. Allowing for normal slippage of 20% due to scrap
tires being re-capped and other uses, TRACC will collect and
process approximately 600,000 passenger tire equivalents (PTES)
per year.
This will represent approximately 10,000,000 pounds of recycled
rubber to be processed by the New Brunswick plant. The
Nova Scotia plant will process a similar volume.
TRACC has adopted a closed loop tire management process. This
process involves collection of whole tires from licensed tire
retailers; shredding and crumbing the tires; processing the
crumb into finished, moulded rubber products; and transporting
the finished goods to market.
Company Origins
On average, Canadians generate one scrap tire per person per
year. This huge volume of tires represents a very pressing
environmental problem across North America.
TRACC (NB) was incorporated in 1996 to address the tire
management problem in Atlantic Canada. The company was selected
in New Brunswick, out of 54 proponents, to be the company with
the best plan to address an environmentally sound scrap tire
management program for the Province.
TRACC (NB) has technology that offers considerable advantages
over existing rubber recycling technologies.
TRACC (NB) will manage New Brunswick's 600,000 annual scrap tires
(net of normal slippage of 20% for re-treading, cottage indus-
tries, tire generator non-compliance and docks).
In doing so, they will respond to the New Brunswick government's
desire: · to reduce the environmental problems and potential risks
associated with scrap tires at the lowest possible cost;
· to contribute to waste reduction policies; and
· to maximise the economic benefits to New Brunswick.
Key Success Factors
TRACC's key features or ''distinctive competencies'' are as
follows: Strong, experienced management team;
Proven technology, allowing for a broad product range;
Plant designed and equipped to handle in excess of 1.3 million
tires annually, allowing for future growth and import of raw
materials to meet market demands; and
TRACC'S ultimate objective is to establish, construct, and
operate three tire crumbing and re-manufacturing plants; one in
Newfoundland, one in New Brunswick, and one in Nova Scotia.
TRACC's comprehensive plan includes all components of scrap tire
management: collection and storage, shredding, crumbing and,
finally, manufacturing finished, value-added products that
compete well in the marketplace.
