Unique Applications: Amoco Canada has improved its control over core
processes to speed operations at its Fort
Saskatchewan, Alberta, processing and
distribution facility. All this happened because
Amoco found just the right way to solve a system
incompatibility problem.
Amoco was looking for a way to improve operations
at the Fort Saskatchewan facility. Controls there
were based on Allen-Bradley's family of
programmable logic controllers (PLCs), but the
protective relay systems, flow computers, and
stand alone controllers that Amoco needed for
faster, more detailed process control were based
on different operating systems.
The X-Link Gateway Engine transfers data between
industrial networks in real time, without
programming. Unlike conventional gateways, X-Link
generate a range of possible gateways from a
library of more than 1300 network protocol
drivers. Because X-Link can potentially provide
as many gateways as there are combinations or
protocols, it will continue to deliver value to
Amoco. Also X-Link can be applied as a general
purpose network communications tool.
After two years of use Amoco continues to be
impressed with how easy it is to set up and
operate X-Link. Once X-Link is installed and
configured, the gateway basically runs itself.
