NATURE OF BUSINESS
Our company carries out under contract applied research and
development in the areas of physical oceanography, underwater
and airborne acoustics, geophysics, acoustic environmental
impact assessment, distributed environmental monitoring and
scientific data analysis. We also manufacture a line of products
that provide unique solutions to the oceanographic and
environmental research and survey communities.
COMPANY HISTORY
JASCO Research Ltd is a small Canadian research and development
firm that was established in 1981. Our research team is composed
of professionals drawn from a broad range of disciplines
including underwater acoustics, geophysics, geology, physics,
electrical and mechanical engineering, and computer science.
TECHNOLOGY FOCUS
The principal activities of JASCO Research Ltd fall into three
broad categories: 1) Applied research in the propagation of sound both in air and
in water from a variety of industrial and military sources,
aimed at providing an accurate estimation of their environmental
effect on a variety of organisms such as marine mammals, fish,
birds and humans. We have developed our own sophisticated
modelling software for a broad range of scenarios and
conditions, and we provide consulting services to a number of
agencies in North America.
2) Development of commercial software for the acquisition,
validation, storage and dissemination of data from environmental
sensors (meteorological, air and water quality, and others). We
provide a full range of support services from custom development
of specialized features to deployment and integration with pre-
existing systems.
3) Development and marketing of advanced instruments and sensors
that are applicable to environment related activities such as
the assessment of the accumulation of detritus and industrial
sludge in lakes, rivers and harbours or the counting of
transiting fish stocks in streams.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS
JEMS: an intelligent, database driven polling and data
management application for the automatic retrieval, parsing,
quality control, storage and distribution of data from remote
monitoring hardware. JEMS is the commercial development of a
system that currently manages air quality information for the
entire Province of British Columbia in Canada, and is based on
the powerful Oracleâ„¢ database technology running on a Windowsâ„¢
NT computer platform. Among the capabilities of JEMS is its
flexibility in adapting to the communications protocol of a
large number of data logger types, making it an ideal system
when there is a requirement to integrate diverse pre-existing
sources of data. Another advanced characteristic of the system
is its extensive use of the Internet and World Wide Web, which
includes fully browser-based data retrieval and system control
as well as automatic and selective notification via e-mail of
any conditions that exceed preset limits.
STING: A self-contained accelerometer probe that measures and
records with great accuracy the thickness and bearing strength
of the first metre to three metres of bottom sediment in lakes,
rivers or harbours. This instrument can be used to assess the
accumulation of bottom silt, detritus or industrial sludge in
environmentally sensitive areas and to gather information on the
sediment consistency. It can be hand deployed easily by a single
operator from a small boat and is ideal both for systematic
surveys and for rapid spot checks. Powerful and intuitive
analysis software provides nearly immediate interpretation of
the data soon after the probe is brought back on board.
UWINSTRU: a cost-effective and reliable underwater attitude
measurement package that provides a continuous reading of the
compass heading, pitch, roll and depth of any structure or
device to which it is attached. These units can provide the
necessary orientation data for equipment used in the monitoring
of water parameters or in the measurement of biomass. An
important application of this instrument has been the precise
aiming of sonar transducers used to count fish populations
transiting in rivers. The capability to measure and maintain
precise sonar orientation has provided a significant increase in
the accuracy and reliability of this fishery management tool at
a number of installations.
