Cape Breton University, located in Sydney, Nova Scotia, is an Atlantic Canadian post-secondary education leader, with a growing national and international focus.
Combined with strong Celtic roots and breathtaking scenery, an education at Cape Breton University provides a multi-faceted experience. Cape Breton Island has an ancestral and cultural line to be envied with great names such as Alexander Graham Bell, Guglielmo Marconi, and the Men of the Deeps. Known as Nova Scotia's Masterpiece with its deep harbours, rolling hills, sandy beaches and lush forests, Cape Breton Island provides the ideal location for contemplation and discovery.
With one of the most favourable faculty student ratios in the country, personalized education is key at Cape Breton University. A dynamic and young university, CBU focuses on quality academic and research excellence, student services, a vibrant campus life, nationally recognized sports teams and technology tools to support undergraduate and graduate education.
Currently home to more than 3,400 students, our university vision of post-secondary education allows students to pursue dynamic fields of study -- both on campus and through online education -- and to design a university education ideally suited for success in the liberal arts, business, science and technology. Close to 600 international students from 40+ countries attend CBU. These countries include China, Russia, Kuwait, Egypt, and Bermuda.
CBU is known for the best of applied learning. It is practiced through such one-of-a-kind programs such as our Bachelor of Arts Community Studies degree. This process-oriented rigor emphasizes real world problem-solving, self-directed learning, critical analysis and community-based skills. Another example of applied learning is through our MBA (CED) degree in Peace-Building, Reconstruction and Good Governance Option, offered in partnership with the Department of National Defence.
Cape Breton University is considered to be a Canadian leader in Aboriginal post-secondary education and works closely with First Nations communities. CBU's Unama'ki College promotes excellence in Aboriginal post-secondary education, research and scholarship with a focus on meeting the post-secondary needs of Aboriginal students locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. More than 500 Aboriginal graduates hold degrees in a variety of academic disciplines supported by continual discussion and dialogue with Aboriginal communities.
Research and development opportunities on campus and in the field put some of our expert researchers in direct contact with undergraduate students, providing them with research projects generally only available to graduate students. CBU also reaches into the heart of the community and the markets of today with innovation and technology.
Culture is an important component of the university and in the fall of 2006, CBU introduced the Centre for Cape Breton Studies. Offerings in Ethnomusicology and Folklore are complemented by such facilities as the Beaton Institute which is now home to the John Allan Cameron papers collection.
The CBU CAPERS five varsity teams -- Men€™s and Women€™s Soccer; Men€™s and Women€™s Basketball, and Women€™s Volleyball – are among the strongest teams in the country. In 2007, the CAPERS Women€™s Soccer team captured their first Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy as Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women€™s soccer champions. It was an especially proud moment since it was also the first time CBU hosted a national championship and marks the first CIS title in any sport for the university.
Our players come from all over Canada, the US and beyond to study at CBU and be a CAPER. Consistently they are named Atlantic University Sport (AUS) players of the week and each year impressive numbers are named to all-star teams plus take the honour of Academic All-Canadians -- recognizing the university and players commitment to education and athletics. CBU€™s club level teams are also capturing titles in women€™s hockey, baseball and rugby.
As ambassadors of Cape Breton University, our alumni family is more than 15,000 members strong. Although they pursue successful careers around the world, more than 80 per cent have chosen to apply their education and skills in Nova Scotia and an impressive 65 per cent of our alumni family keeps their hearts in Cape Breton.
In 2005, CBU embarked on its first major endowment campaign in ten years. Within ten short months, the university doubled its endowment from 7M to more than 14M for student scholarships and bursaries. The ‘Future First€™ campaign, spearheaded by well-known Cape Breton Island businessman Joe Shannon, was supported by local and national committee members including CBU Chancellor, Annette Verschuren, and many alumni and friends.
Our international student base is growing and international partnerships continue to develop in such areas as China and Egypt. For example CBU€™s partnership campus, the Canadian International College (CIC) Cairo campus in Egypt, officially opened in September 2004, has been a success. Through this partnership, CIC students can complete their four-year CBU degree at the Cairo campus or have the opportunity of transferring to CBU at any time during their program.
