Success Stories: DON L STEELE started singing at family parties at age six. He started playing guitar at 9 years old. At age 15 he was busking the streets of Toronto. By 17 he was working professionally on the road across Western Canada and by 19 he was featured on CHCH-TV, Channel 11 Jamboree, in Hamilton, Ontario.
By his early 20€™s Don was doing TV, radio jingles and recording sessions. During this time he studied Theory and Harmony with Art Snider and Hank Monis; Voice with Charles Jordan and Classic Guitar with Eli Kassner [teacher of Leona Boyd]. .
He was hired by King Ganam for the CBC-TV network Country Hoedown show. He had worked at the Casa Loma and recorded on RCA Victor records with him previously.
This is the show that Gordon Lightfoot got his start. He was in the Singing Swing Eight which were the back up singer/dancers on the show. Gordon was also doing guest spots with his partner Terry [the Duotones] on the show. Don was asked to join the Duotones as guitarist but they couldn€™t agree on terms. At that time they were all doing jingles and record sessions at Newbury sound Studio for Art Snider and his record label, Chateau records.
About this time he was offered a job with Bill Black€™s combo [Elvis Prestley€™s original bass player] but he was committed to TV and club engagements in Toronto.
Don became featured banjo and guitar soloist with the Folk / Dixie band in New York City, the "Village Stompers", [world-wide #1 hit record "Washington Square"]. They were featured on ABC-TV Jimmy Dean (2xs) with Jake Hanna on drums; Mike Douglas (2xs) shows plus clubs such as: the Sahara, Las Vegas; Metropole, Times Square, New York City; London House, Chicago; Harveys in Lake Tahoe, Nevada; Saddle and Sirloin, Tucson, Arizona; Colonial, Toronto [record attendance]; Mickey Finn€™s, San Diego and the Steel Pier, Atlantic City [now a Casino] and working on shows with Sonny James, Jim Henson, Kay Starr, Norm Crosby, Dick Gregory and Vaughn Munroe.
As studio backup musician on Guitar and Banjo, he has done over 450 shows on private TV plus more than 150 shows on network TV in the USA and Canada, such as: CTV network€™s Diamond Lil (tenor banjo, 39 shows); Grand Old Country (5-string banjo, 24 shows); CBC-TV€™s Bob MacLean (featured on vocal and guitar); He plays six string instruments proficiently, knows thousands of great songs and has taught many successful students.
