As contract creative director for Canadian Geographic Enterprises since 2002, Stephen Hanks directed and designed the organization's graphic materials, including many of those produced in partnership with the Trans Canada Trail Foundation. These included poster maps showing the trail's route through Atlantic Canada, Quebec and Ontario.
Stephen is a very creative, talented and accomplished art director and project manager with many years of graphic design experience.
He has a finely tuned typographic sensibility, the perceptive eye of a photo editor and a flair for the appropriate presentation and packaging of all content, whether it is editorial or promotional.
Having worked closely with Stephen for many years, I can heartily recommend Design Matters for any graphic design project.

should the opportunity present itself.

Mr. Stephen Hanks is a consultant who has performed excellent graphic design work – often on short notice and under tight deadlines – on several projects for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) over the past two years.
In particular, Mr. Hanks€™ expertise proved invaluable in designing and producing a series of oversized chart packages in 2005-06, which comprised a number of maps, diagrams, statistical tables and other information that were presented in a visually appealing and coherent fashion. These charts were in high demand by senior government bureaucrats, including a select group of Deputy Ministers at various committee meetings.
Mr. Hanks was able to take on a project at very short notice during the summer of 2006 in which knowledge of specialized design graphic software (Quark Xpress) was needed to manipulate the data and produce a pamphlet on Canada€™s representation abroad that was very well-received by the department€™s senior management. This project, which involved painstaking attention to detail, also came with a very short deadline that Mr. Hanks was able to meet with no difficulty. The pamphlet has since been circulated to a wider audience including missions abroad, the general public and journalists.
In the fall of 2006 and early in 2007, Mr. Hanks undertook another assignment involving a complex PowerPoint slide presentation that, over the months, required significant and frequent revisions to both the style and the content. A plethora of information needed to be massaged, ranging from numerous Excel spreadsheets to diagrammatic representations of various data sets, with the information being conveyed to senior management in a creative and dynamic fashion.
In all of his contract work with DFAIT, Mr. Hanks has provided cheerful and reliable service, including the incorporation of time-consuming French translations of all products.
It has been a pleasure to work with Mr. Hanks, and I would be delighted to recommend his services to other government departments providing contract work to consultants.
