International Capital Projects: project one: malaysia health development project
central, plus four regional facilities / administrative centre
Kuala Lumpur, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Ipoh, Melaka MALAYSIA
Approx. cost $85 million USD
david ELLIS architect won this project through a World Bank sponsored design competition of over thirty of the largest firms from USA, Britain, Japan - Canada.
The project included the design and construction of a Central Administrative Headquarters and main research facility to be used for health, food and environmental testing in Kuala Lumpur, nestled on a small and already densely occupied site.. Shortly after opening, this building became the headquarters for the athletic testing used during the last Commonwealth Games.
Keeping with our design values, these buildings are designed to be flexible in nature, to allow for anticipated changes in technology, processes, or imperatives, without impeding, restricting or reducing the efficiencies of the laboratories.
project two: lake superior state university
crawford hall of science
michigan usa
The campus consists of older and dignified historic structures. The design builds on the intrinsic attributes in more modern form of the traditional architecture by taking design cues from the old Fort Brady campus buildings. This brings a contemporary look, yet steeped with historic reference.
The project includes the nursing school, biology, zoology, chemistry, geology and computer laboratories, plus a geological museum and planetarium. To best utilise space, the new addition was designed to accommodate the most heavily serviced laboratories, while the renovated areas (generally due to space restrictions) include simpler classroom and lecture type uses. This project won Mr. Ellis the coveted ‘Laboratory of the Year Award€™, the only ever awarded to a Canadian architect.
