The SUBBOR process is a patented Canadian biotechnology which
processes unsorted Municipal Solid Waste and produces
sustainable electricity and re-usable products without the use
of incineration or landfilling. 100% of MSW is recycled, 0%
goes to landfill and 0% goes to incineration.
SUBBOR provides significant environmental, technical and
financial benefits, including a CO2 reduction benefit of 2.8
tonnes for every tonne of MSW processed as compared to landfill.
Put into perspective, if Canada€™s six largest cities utilized
SUBBOR, a CO2 benefit of 35 million tonnes would be achieved,
thus meeting 25% of Canada€™s Kyoto commitment.
SUBBOR€™s parent, Eastern Power commenced operations in 1988. All of its principals are Canadian and actively participate in the
management of the company. The core business of the company is
in the business of managing municipal solid waste and derivative
power.
Eastern Power is the owner/operator of the Brock West Power
Plant in Pickering (28 megawatt capacity) and the Keele Valley
Power Plant in Vaughan (32 megawatt capacity). These power
plants are both fueled by landfill gas and are the world€™s
second and third largest landfill gas fueled power plants.

Services:
Total waste management solution, Waste to energy - electricity production - co-generation, Waste disposal services, Landfill prevention, Recycling

Technology:
The SUBBOR process of 100% recycling consists of three steps.
STAGE 1: CONVENTIONAL MATERIALS RECOVERY
Unsorted municipal solid waste is received directly at the SUBBOR
facility on an enclosed tipping floor. MSW is mechanically
sorted to recover recyclable products.
STAGE TWO: ENHANCED ANAEROBIC DIGESTION
The waste stream remaining after stage one is rich in organic
material. This material is prepared for digestion and then
subjected to a sealed thermally enhanced anaerobic digester.
During digestion, a large portion of the waste is converted to a
methane-rich biogas, which is collected and used in the
electrical power production (stage three).
STAGE THREE: PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICAL POWER - CO-GENERATION
ENERGY FROM BIOGAS: Marketable electrical power and thermal energy is generated from
biogas produced in stage two. This technology builds on the
extensive experience of Eastern Power with landfill gas to
electricity systems at Keele Valley and Brock West.

Sector:
Plant Information: Total Plant Size (Areas sq ft): (Brock West Power
Plant: 27,000 sq ft)
(Keele Valley Power
Plant: 28,600 sq ft)
(SUBBOR Facility: 65,400 sq ft)
Key / Major Clients: City of Toronto, City of Pickering, City of
Vaughan, City of Guelph.
Success Stories: BROCK WEST POWER PLANT: In 1989, Eastern Power was selected to
electricity from landfill gas. Construction of
the power plant was completed in 1990, and full
scale operations commenced in July 1991. This
power plant generates approx. 28MW with 90%
availablity.
KEELE VALLEY POWER PLANT: In 1992 Eastern Power was selected to construct
and operate a power plant that utilized landfill
gas to produce electricity. Eastern Power began
construction in 1994, and produced electricity in
April 1995. this power plant produces 32MW with
90% availability.
GUELPH SUBBOR FACILITY: The development of the SUBBOR process by our
engineers. Construction of the facility began in
1999 and commenced accepting waste in April
2000. This is the only process today that
can eliminate the need for landfills without the
use of incineration.
This facility was developed with the support of
Industry Canada and the National Research Council
of Canada through the Technology Partnerships
Canada Program. the Industry Canada investment
program was supported by SUBBOR being identified
as a key Technology for Early Action Member
(TEAM) through Canada's Climate Change
Secretariat.
