Success Stories: In 2007 The Town of Markham began the extensive process of establishing its 4-year strategic direction with a focus on 6 major areas - Growth Management; Transportation/Transit; Environment; Municipal Services; Parks, Recreation, Culture and Library Master Plan/Public Safety and Diversity. Mayor Frank Scarpitti was in search of an innovative way to engage the community in the process of public consultation in order to help in the development of the strategic plan and to ensure that the Town Council was heading in the right direction. Mayor Scarpitti, a dynamic public speaker, was captured and created as an online video which was placed on the Click with Markham website. From November 8th to November 30th, 2007 people could view short video clips of the strategic initiatives and provide their feedback online and in real time. The hearing impaired could read a simultaneous online transcript of the video in the same way that they read closed captioning of television programs. During the Click with Markham campaign there were more than 7,000 hits to the website. Just under 5,000 people filled out the survey – this is a 5% response rate which is 5 times the industry average. These statistics far exceeded The Town of Markham€™s expectations.
