The British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), provides Provincial Mandated Services. Included in this are the divisions of Epidemiology, STD Control, TB Control, Pharmacy, UBCCDC , BC Hepatitis Services and Provincial Laboratory Services. Other divisions that support these areas include Administration, Shared Services, Materials Management, Finance and Information Management.
Epidemiology
The Division of Epidemiology Services (ES) investigates and evaluates the occurrence of communicable diseases (CD) in British Columbia. Epidemiology is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies/programs for communicable disease prevention and control. The Division is the provincial reporting centre for reportable cases of communicable disease.
In conjunction with the University of BC and Health Canada, ES is a training site for Federal Field Epidemiologists and University of BC medical residents.
STD Control
The Division of Sexually Transmitted Disease/AIDS Control (STD/AIDS) coordinates province-wide policies and programs to reduce the spread of STDs and minimize their adverse health effect. STD/AIDS Control is the provincial reporting centre for cases of STDs and AIDS. The Division is the major provincial training site in STDs and HIV/AIDS for medical residents, interns, and public health nurses. STD/AIDS Control also operates an ambulatory clinic in BCCDC's main facility and a Prevention Street Program in the downtown eastside of Vancouver. STD/AIDS Control has an Aboriginal Program, Chee Mamuk, which provides education to Aboriginal communities and organizations in BC.
TB Control
The Division of Tuberculosis Control (TB) serves as British Columbia's referral centre for the prevention, control and treatment of tuberculosis infection and disease. The Division operates programs and policy development, designed to ensure a progressive reduction in the annual incidence of active tuberculosis.
TB Control operates ambulatory clinics in BCCDC's main facility, in New Westminster, in Victoria, and a Street Outreach Program in the downtown eastside of Vancouver. Other areas of British Columbia are served by the Division's Field Operations. Tuberculosis services to aboriginals on- and off-reserve are also provided by the Division.
Information Management
The Information Management Division provides support services to the centre's operational divisions and hosts the Public Health Information System (PHIS) on behalf of regional health authorities and the province's Ministry of Health. PHIS provides a centralized information resource to Regional Health Authorities across British Columbia and supports immunization tracking, communicable disease reporting, and public health service delivery.
BC Hepatitis Services
In July, 1999, A Hepatitis Strategy for British Columbia was submitted to government. The Strategy proposed an integrated model of prevention and care management that includes a number of initiatives to support a coherent and comprehensive approach to the issues associated with viral hepatitis infection. In December, 2000, provincial government funding for some components of the Strategy were announced, including the establishment of BC Hepatitis Services. BC Hepatitis Services' mandate is to promote and support a performance based approach to viral hepatitis prevention and care across British Columbia.
Our research and clinical partnerships with health professionals and community groups throughout the province provides the networks essential to the integration of services and programs. With our Provincial Hepatitis Advisory Committee we prioritize program implementation, with the principle of equity of access to services for all the citizens of British Columbia. We are working toward improving the availability of reliable and clinically current information to patients and the public.
UBCCDC
The UBC CDC is a joint venture of the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and the University of British Columbia (UBC), established in 1998. The focus of the Centre is collaborative research into the surveillance, control and prevention of communicable disease.
