The bbg development team developed and integrated a custom content management system for the Cognos team. This system would provide the administrator with an effective and simple interface to manage content, and a compelling user interface for the end user. The output of the application was a CD-ROM that provided new hires with information about the company, its history and its philosophy as well as basic day-to-day information such as the steps required to set up their phone system or connecting their laptop computers to the internal network.
Our greatest challenge was to deliver many different types of information (text, imagery, video, etc.) in a useful and intuitive interface which was fun and engaging while remaining easily updatable at the same time. An additional requirement was that Cognos themselves had to facilitate these updates.
To solve this challenge we developed a Flash based application coupled with an instance of an internet browser within it provided by Northcode SWFStudio v2. This allowed users to surf through the CD-ROM content using an animated Flash navigation structure which populated the demo with content pulled externally from xhtml files. The Flash navigation itself was also updatable via an external XML file allowing for easy section addition, deletion and modification. This facilitates the easy updating of the entire CD by anyone familiar with a basic knowledge of html and xml.
