Alberta Sulphur Research Ltd. (ASRL) was formed in 1964 and operates as a not-for-profit research organization in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Calgary. ASRL is funded entirely by the private sector. It is supported by fifty-eight members engaged directly or indirectly in the production, handling and transportation of elemental sulfur. More than ninety percent of Alberta's sulfur producing industries are active members of ASRL, as well as other organizations, with sulfur related interests in Canada, The United States, The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands. ASRL fosters research in the areas of chemistry and technology of sulfur and its compounds with particular emphasis on topics of importance to the sulfur and sour gas industry. ASRL serves as a contact point between industry and academia and strives to provide an expert level of technological support for both producers and users of this essential resource. In addition, ASRL is in a good position to provide training and R - D exposure for staff entering this field of research and technology.

Technology:
ASRL research activities cover the spectrum of sulfur-related technologies involved in the production of natural gas from the reservoir, to processing of the gas and production of elemental sulfur, and to handling and end uses of sulfur. The aim of the ASRL research program is to examine questions which are of interest to the industry in short, medium and long-term time
frames.
Our research program is divided into Core Research and Contract Research activities. Much of our Core Research work is oriented towards increasing energy efficiency in industrial operations which, almost as a matter of course, assists our member companies in meeting their environmental objectives. Key initiatives at present include sulfur management issues (acid gas injection, SO2 injection and sulfur blocking), increasing sulfur recovery efficiency in Claus systems, development of new sulfur recovery technologies, utilizing sulfur in ther petrochemical industries and handling sulfur in the transportation and export chain. We also continue to do a great deal of work in the area of sour gas production particularly with respect to sulfur deposition in the well and surface facilities and methods for prevention of corrosion in pipelines.
