- 3 tonne special semi gantry - monorail theatre crane complete design and project management
- Step by step assembling manual for the 3 ton special theatre crane
This project was very unique regarding the shape of the area which has been covered with crane as well as assembling and disassembling the crane when project is finished.
Gala System, supplier for the special reversible seats for the theatre at Richmond River Casino and Coquitlam Red Robin Casino sent inquiry to several crane companies for the quote and design. After couple months none of them had design to cover shape as theatre shape was and without any respond.
I got a call from Kaverit Steel and Crane and they ask me if I want to try to do something with this project on my own. For me that was huge challenge to find right design. After spending one month sketching possible ideas finally I came up to design which will solve customer needs.
Idea was to put monorail beam with two columns on the stage where seat components (3 ton max weight) will be delivered from outside and moved to the pit and on other side of the pit it will be rail with special gantry leg with box girder pivoting point up and swiveling wheel cubes down. On same time there was a special double under running trolley with box girder pivoting point.
Design was accepted by Gala Systems and after that with Kaverit Steel and Crane we have manufactured, supplied and installed this special crane. Finally crane was assembled and worked very well from the beginning to the end. On site manager Pierre Couture told me that saving was significant using this crane system instead of using mobile cranes. Just using crane in the Richmond location he said crane was paid off.
Coquitlam theatre was even 10 ft longer. The crane box girder was already predesigned for span extension after moving from Richmond to Coquitlam. We did make girder longer by inserting and bolting the middle box of 10 ft long.
Another customer requirement was that all equipment has to be fitted into 40 ft container regarding transport from site to site.
For that reason stage monorail was bolted in the middle as monorail was the longest part.
Also they asked me to write step by step manual that theirs work force can assembled and disassembled crane units any time moving crane system from one location to other.
Testimonial: The employees reported that everything went well with the crane, controls and lifting gear. They were pleased. Thanks for all your help and hope to continue working with you.
