SCIMUS Inc. was established in 1983 as a company providing
consulting services in radiation protection, nuclear facility licensing, environmental impact assessment, site remediation and waste management. Its expertise is centered around that of Dr. Buchnea's more than
35 years experience. The firm has been active supplying its expertise in projects involving
many different types of wastes: radioactive wastes (high and low level),
uranium mine and mill tailings wastes, metals mining and milling
wastes, landfill wastes, industrial wastes and hazardous wastes. SCIMUS has developed radiation protection programs, licensed new facilities, assisted in developing remedial plans and conducted
environmental impact assessment and risk assessment studies. The radiation expertise in SCIMUS has also been applied to shielding analysis, ALARA assessments, HAZOP studies, waste characterization, site
selection, risk identification and assessment, and waste disposal studies.
SCIMUS has been involved extensively in the nuclear industry: Licensing waste management facilities (high and medium level radioactive liquids in an engineered storage structure, low level radioactive wastes in various in-ground structures, developing licensing strategies, criteria development, remediation of old waste structures, radiation protection activities, and environmental and risk assessment studies.
SCIMUS has been involved extensively in the uranium industry: Developing radiation protection programs during uranium exploration and drilling, baseline and characterization studies
for various uranium mine sites in northern Saskatchewan, environmental impact assessment
and risk assessment studies for uranium tailings in
northern Saskatchewan, and in developing and assessing disposal
options for uranium refinery wastes. SCIMUS has also provided expert advise to FEARO panels for several new uranium mining projects in northern Saskatchewan.
SCIMUS has been involved extensively with NORM wastes: Phosphate fertilizer site remediation, waste characterization, site selection and waste disposal
studies for Port Hope low level radioactive wastes, and remediation of a former metallurgical research facility for arsenic rich ores in Deloro, Ontario.
Clients have included Ontario Power Generation, Atomic Energy of Canada, Ltd., Cameco, Rio Algom, Aurora Resources Ltd., Mosaic Company, and various levels of government in Canada.
Partnering Interests
SCIMUS has completed most of its projects in Canada in
partnership with other environmental consulting companies, from
small (less than 10 employees) to large (greater than 5000
employees), and would be interested in forming similar
associations with firms in Canada, the US, and Europe.
