The CANSOLV System process was proven during a 9 month demonstration at Suncor Inc.'s Tar Sands Plant in Ft. McMurray, Alberta. The $10 million program showed reliable, easy removal of SO(2) from 6,000 Nm(3) of flue gas from boilers firing 7% sulfur petroleum coke.

The Cansolv¨ System SO2 removal process.
The Cansolv¨ System SO2 removal process is an aqueous amine-based, regenerative gas desulfurization process capable or removing SO2 down to a few ppm, if desired, from most stationary sources. It is flexible, robust, easy to operate and represents an effective solution to regulation-driven market needs and it does so in a manner which vastly improves upon existing desulfurization technologies in terms of physical dimensions, capital and operating costs, and environmental impact. The Cansolv System, can be applied to sulfuric acid and spent acid recovery plants, sulfide or smelters, sulfur recovery units, SO2 production, flue
gas desulfurization units and pulp mills.
SO2SAFEª Technology for SO2 storage and transport.
The storage of sulfur dioxide as a liquid under pressure presents a serious risk due to the possibility of a catastrophic release of SO2. Gaseous SO2 is very toxic, showing adverse health effects at concentrations as low as 3 parts per million. The SO2SAFE Technology mitigates the hazard by dissolving the gas in a high capacity solvent, thereby limiting the release of gaseous SO2 in case of a leak or spill. The SO2 is produced for use as required by regeneration from the solvent in an automated unit. The solvent is recycled after regeneration. The SO2 rich solvent is produced by capturing SO2 from any convenient sources, such as flue gas.
In this way, air pollution is prevented and the former pollutant is turned into a valuable chemical. Since fuels of high sulfur content are generally cheaper than low sulfur products, additional economies in fuel cost may also be realized.
