Enerkem is a leader in the development and production of second-generation transportation fuels, such as cellulosic ethanol. These biofuels are produced from waste and biomass residues.
The Company has developed a gasification and catalytic synthesis technology, and has been operating a pilot plant since 2003. This pilot plant has logged more than 3,500 hours of operation, using more than 20 types of feedstock, ranging from sorted municipal solid waste to wood chips, to produce methanol and second-generation ethanol.
Enerkem's first commercial-scale plant is now under construction in Westbury, Québec, and will be operational in the fall of 2008. This will be one of the first commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol production facilities in the world. The plant will produce up to 5 million litres of cellulosic ethanol from creosoted electricity poles and other waste materials.
Working in partnership with GreenField Ethanol, Canada's leading ethanol producer, Enerkem is also developing a series of projects in Canada. In addition, as it breaks ground on its first projects in Canada, Enerkem is also actively developing a number of sites in the United States.
Thanks to a complete in-house team of process engineers, the Company does not depend on any external engineering group. Enerkem is also a project developer, and is able to integrate all phases of a project, from securing sites and feedstock to engineering and managing plant construction and operations.
The Company has invested in world-class R - D activities in the area of biofuels, and works closely with Université de Sherbrooke, Canada. R - D projects focus on new catalysts that can be applied to its proprietary syngas streams, with a view to producing low-cost, high-value biofuels.
